My parents and I came to this country in hopes of getting away from the socialism that gradually eats up and destroys everything that this nation is built upon: achievement, competition and freedom... and now, I'm right back in hell... [More]We realize when it comes to banking you have no choice, and that's why we thank you for letting us be the one to manage your financial affairs. And your health. And your life...
All your soul are belong to us.
And remember: We are all socialists now!

Do we really need banks at all? I know it can be convenient, but I seriously doubt it is necessary. I don't use one anymore, and I have no intention of doing so ever again.
If the government takes them all over, so be it. They will all fail that much faster and demonstrate anew just what hopeless morons they are.
The trick is to stop allowing the government to steal our productivity! When they are really and truly broke, and nobody will accept their funny money any longer, the end will be near.
Tough times ahead until then? Sure, but we're going there anyway. Might as well make something good out of it.
"do we need banks?" -- an interesting question that i would probably put to one of the LRC or mises.org writers to ask (rhetorically) and answer.
banks arose in the market much like hard money did. they serve a dual purpose in markets which exchange primarily in hard money. storage of heavy metals and loaning of large sums to productive business, in order to generate interest for depositors.
we do need some mechanism of usury in order to produce even the most basic of goods. i say this not because i know it intuitively, but because it arose in a free market.
i see nothing wrong with starting over in the realm of banking. paypal nearly accomplished this online. perhaps communities will start free banks for themselves. certainly the authorities will come knocking, but, you can be sure that they have no reason to, except at the whim of a federal reserve which means to monopolize and industrialize banking.
but such a thing would be none of their business. it would be a town or village trust. so that would be a good signal that it was high time to "shoot the bastards."
That M'F'er really is the Blightworker!
I wonder how the damfools who voted this monster in like their Hopenghange now.
Socialism occurs when the government pays 40% of the salaries...we're at 38.6%, and the housing stimulus puts us over the top...I wonder if anyone realizes that?
(I'm an Business and Economics Major with a finance concentration...trust me)
Actually Mama Liberty,
Yes, lending institutions are necessary and have been since we started trading with one another.
Jon's analysis is pretty damn close.
The only thing that I would take note of is the fact that the current banking network is NOT free, it is NOT capitalist, and it CANNOT survive. Fiat currency will bury the modern Banking industry.
