Love Your Children? Teach Them How to Safely Handle Guns

The unintended consequence of the avoidance approach is it ensures ignorance, so if a child does encounter a gun, they will be clueless as to what to do next. And like it or not, all the theoretical admonitions in the world are no substitute for knowledge and experience. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column advocates education. How telling that the Bradys adopt the Orwellian "Ignorance is strength" position.

I 100% agree. My grandfather did this with all of his grand kids.
In addition... I would go a step further.

In addition to taking my kids out shooting and hunting and inviting my friends and their kids out to the range... I also do my best to bring non-gun-owners, liberals, anti-gunners, and hoplophobes out to the range.

The goals of taking anti-gunners (and others that might not have an opinion) out to the range:
- to dispel the myths about guns that have been propagated by the Brady Bunch
- to dispel the myth that those who own guns are bad
- to remove some of the ignorance associated with blindly following utopian ideals
- to promote gun ownership
- Finally, to identify those that will continue with intention to trample my rights despite not having the excuse of ignorance.

Have I changed hearts and minds? Yes, a few. Most don't do a perfect 180 and I wouldn't expect them to. However, most do think a lot more about the topic. Most finally do understand the issues better than before. Education is a powerful thing.

Sigh...

Many, many, years ago, when I was eight years old, my father gifted me, at Christmas time, with my first .22 rifle. Now prior to that we always had firearms in the house, and I was educated that they were tools and NOT toys.

Firearms safety was literally pounded into my head, being that I was and am a tad bit thick-headed. It was not only taught at home, but at Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, then hunter safety courses that were put on by the NRA through the Boy Scouts

We learned at an early age, that you always, first and foremost, checked and made sure that said weapon was not loaded and that you never, never, never, pointed the muzzle at anything or anyone that you were not going to shoot.

At age ten, I received my first center fire. An 03-A3 that my father had sporterized. That was waaaay back there when you could purchase these wonderful things, still packed in cosmoline, through the mail, for the grand sum of $25.00 a copy.

With all of that said, I carried the tradition that my father started me with, through to my children. Now, they are carrying on to their children.

The short of it.....education, not gun control is the answer. The FEDGOV cannot control what they do, how can anyone expect them to control what the individual does.

'Nuff rant for now,

Bob
