A Game of Inches

She never heard of the Tueller drill? [More]

So now do we need a measuring wheel, and to ask the assailant to hold up a moment while we roll off the distance?  And it's "thirty (30) feet of the threshold or nearest access of entry," so being on the porch doesn't cut it.

I'd like to see somebody give her a laser pointer (no, not that kind) and have her consistently spot 30 feet.

And I assume 29'11" would be cause for a world of legal hurt?

Five Minute Activism.

Ms. Dixon,

When you were elected to serve your fellow Mississippians, did you immediately discard your common sense? Or did you not have any to begin with? There are a number of problems with limiting a person's right to defend oneself to thirty feet from the door of the residence. You suppose that you can so narrowly define when a person will be attacked. What about a person walking a dog down the street? Would that person not be entitled to defense of oneself? You would be well advised to reexamine just where an individual gets his rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Those rights do not come from the pen you wield in creating your unjust edicts. Rights are endowed by the creator, enumerated in the Constitution, and cannot be abrogated by a two bit state representative. Read something constructive like Marbury v. Madison, 5 U.S. 137.

Sincerely,

HinMO

So, wait: If this were enacted in my area and someone were standing on the sidewalk (which is more than 30' from my house) shooting at the house, I'd be legally unprotected if I were to shoot back? What are my remedies? Step off my property to move from "Castle Doctrine" to "Stand Your Ground" protections? Did I mention the >30' of intervening space?

Talk about empowering criminals....

Folks in Mississippi should get little Gasden flags made the size of the utility markers used to denote underground cables and such and put them out at a 30 foot circumference around their houses. A political statement, fair warning, and a visual distance aid all in one.
