Sean Penn owning guns after domestic violence plea raises legal questions

What Penn is even doing with guns in the first place is a mystery, if the reports are true that when partnered with Madonna, he tied her to a chair and beat her up with a baseball bat. The Lautenberg amendment prohibition on gun ownership applies to those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, and according to the New York Daily News, “Penn was also charged with felony domestic assault during his marriage to Madonna. He pleaded to a misdemeanor.” [More]

As usual, all the “real reporters” missed the real story. Today’s Gun Rights Examiner report asks how someone with a Lautenberg gun prohibition can have 65 guns to melt down in the first place. Perhaps it would make for a good Five Minute Activism project to ask @ATFHQ...

Could it be that like cops, famous people are offered plea deals that recast sexual assault or domestic violence into violations that don't affect the defendant's future rights?

I would be interesting to know what he plead guilty to.

Come on, David, everyone knows gun laws are for "little" people like you and me, not the Hollywood elite! Those are important people, BHO's base. BTW, wasn't Sean Penn one of the maroons who was going to leave the USA if George Bush was re-elected? Looks like he's still here.

That's why it's important to do what I asked--in the time it takes to leave a comment here, one can send a comment to ATF and ask how he answered 11.i on the 4473s. If they get enough, they'll be scared to ignore it. If they only hear from a couple, not so much.

Meanwhile, convicted felon Marky Mark continues to shoot and use firearms during movie making, and trains with them prior to the film making.

If these celebs can get their convictions erased and their rights restored, why is it next to impossible for the average guy with a 20 year old nonviolent felony on the books to have his rights restored?

Some animals are more equal than others?

Does not matter who it is.

"The Lautenberg amendment prohibition on gun ownership"

Itself is bad law...

Could/should one be denied the right to free speech even after being convicted of a felony let alone a misdemeanor?

No

The same should properly be applied to exercise of the Second Amendment..

Once someone has been convicted of a crime.. and served what ever sentence...Once freed (Fines paid whatever) all their civil liberties should properly be restored..

Regardless of who they are..

Joe Six Pack or some silly actor

Anon @7:42, I'm not aware of anyone here who disagrees with that.
