The original charge is enough to make you scratch your head and mutter WTF?
They say he claimed to be a deputy in Morgan County during a traffic stop in Fairfield, at a time when he was still a reserve deputy in Athens, but after he was no longer a deputy in Morgan or Fairfield:
Scofield allegedly claimed to be a Morgan County sheriff’s deputy when he was pulled over for a traffic violation Feb. 10 by a Fairfield County deputy. Scofield reportedly had with him a sheriff deputy’s hat.
He was issued a warning at let go Feb. 10.
“(Scofield) could produce no photo ID or official government ID that would confirm that he was a commissioned officer anywhere,” said Lt. Alex Lape of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office. “He claimed to be, but he didn’t produce the credentials. That’s what started the whole suspicion.”
Lape said Scofield was once an auxiliary deputy for the sheriff’s offices in both Fairfield County and Morgan County, but was not commissioned by either at the time of the Feb. 10 traffic stop.
However, Scofield was a commissioned reserve deputy with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 10, leaving investigators to ponder why he allegedly told the Fairfield County deputy he was with Morgan County.
