An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Caliber control! [More]

Leave it to eggheads to conclude from a "study" that bigger holes can have more impact than smaller ones -- depending on placement, of course.

That still does nothing to challenge the requirement for a human agent.  Then again, cause and effect don't really matter when the goal is to rile up a mob.

I learn something new every time I come to this site. According to the cited article, a medium caliber .38 special (projectile diameter .357 inch) is smaller than a large caliber .357 Magnum (projectile diameter .357 inch).

I would love to see the raw data used for this story to be published.

A factor left unmentioned is whether the firearms were acquired on the black market, stolen directly from lawful owners, or were purchased by a holder of a Massachusetts License To Carry (LTC) from a FFL dealer. Since the Boston Police Commissioner is loath to issue the LTC to applicants who are unfortunate residents of Boston, it is uncertain how many shooters in this study possessed a LTC.

Since more than three quarters of the shootings are gang related, it is doubtful that there is an effective way to shift the caliber used to a smaller one. What self-respecting gang member would intentionally acquire a less effective firearm? If anything, the gang members who are readers of JAMA will insist on larger caliber firearms from their sources of firearms.
