"he and his family were “gun fanatics” and knew gun safety. Though he and his brother sometimes pointed guns at each other in fun, Nichols said, they always made sure the guns weren’t loaded."

Sounds like they learned "gun safety" from a Giffords, Brady, or Bloomberg "gun safety" course, because I can assure you this is the exact opposite of Lesson Zero in every NRA course I have taught.

Forty-five years ago, at Malmstrom Air Force Bae, two Security Police airmen we’re in the habit of playing “fast draw” on each other. Of course they knew their .38 Spc revolvers weren’t loaded. Except one of them had loaded his just before he began his patrol of the base. The other of the pair called “draw”, which the airman was the now loaded weapon did. Result, one dead, one arrested, and several NCOs and a commissioned officer relieved.

I know about this because it happened while I was stationed there, though I wasn’t directly involved.

This sort of irresponsible behavior isn’t new, it should have ended decades ago.
