That's just because your special expertise is guns.
If you were a banker or an astronomer, you'd say precisely the same thing, but about finance or cosmology.
There's a relevant quote I can't find at the moment, to the point of, "Knowing how wrong you see the media getting issues you know professionally, why do you automatically continue to give assume their credibility on any other subject?"
