Some people believe that America's downward slide began when the Dodgers left Brooklyn. ;-)
I have a slightly different take on the subject. I believe it started when the states stopped requiring a passing grade in a Civics or Government class in order to get a high school diploma.
The bottom line is that a young American can graduate from multiple academic programs and advance quite far in society while never having been required to learn anything about how their government(s) are supposed to function.
One example of this is now President of the United States.
