IMHO.. this story had a happy ending.
The conventional wisdom is that there are hundreds of thousands of defensive use of firearms annually that go totally undocumented. Only when a shot(s) are fired or a high profile public incident is there any police report. I had my own undocumented "incident" at my front door at 01:00 Christmas morning 2012. The miscreant seeing my handgun at the ready told him I meant business and he left. A 911 call to the state police immediately after was only that, a phone call. There was no mention by me of being armed, and they never came out to my place to check.
