The Joe Gun firearms store two miles east of Sanford is open for business, although most of the owner's inventory of 200 firearms is locked in the evidence room of the Midland County Sheriff's Department and may remain there for years.I don't get why sworn depositions along with an audited inventory list and a photographic record wouldn't suffice, but what do I know? I guess it's a good thing I'm not a lawyer.
Prosecutors will need the weapons as they try to convict seven suspects police arrested in raids in Saginaw and Midland counties this week.

That story was just one long quote from the owner, and the reporter didn't even know that a "dead-bold" was actually a dead-bolt lock.
That said, I don't believe anything else in the article.

Every one of those firearms will be introduced as evidence in the trial against the people that stole them. They will sit in an evidence locker/room whatever until that time collecting dust. Unfortunately for Joe's Guns, it's going to be a long time.

If the nature of the crime lies in the fact that the owner of the property was deprived of his property, then the government is aiding and abetting the criminals by extending that deprivation.
But, but I thoguht we were guaranteed a fair and speedy trial.....
I would point out that not once has a jetliner been seized and held as evidence, despite proof positive they were used in drug smuggling and terrorism.
I would further caution Mr. Furst to secrete a list of all the firearms the police supposedly have in the property room, and any photos he may have of same. There will be a lot of those firearms that get "lost", "misplaced", or "inadvertently destroyed by mistake" and will not be available for return to him after the trials.
And since he won't have access to the personal collections of the LE personnel, he will need a record of each and every item in order to hold the cops accountable for their return or replacement.
