We're the Only Ones Negatively Impacting Others Enough

A Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy was charged Thursday with two misdemeanor manslaughter charges after he ran down three competitive bicyclists in his patrol car in Cupertino, killing two and injuring the third...

Council crossed the center line on Stevens Canyon Road in Cupertino and struck the three cyclists at 10:25 a.m. on a Sunday, authorities said. Witnesses at the scene said there were no skid marks and that the officer said he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

And it's the job's fault. Long hours.

We've all worked long hours. I'm just wondering if the same charges would have applied to any of us under similar circumstances, not being "Only Ones" and all.

We all know what it's like to go the extra mile for a paycheck. But we all have a responsibility to make sure our pursuit of that paycheck doesn't put others at risk.

A few years back one of our state legislators from this area was returning home from the capitol. He was coming up the highway south of town when he encountered a car who was turning left and had stopped, waiting for the oncoming lane to clear. Rather than stop and wait for the left-turning car to make their turn, our 'lawmaker' decided to break the law and pass the car on the right - in the shoulder. Passing on the right (on a two lane road) is already illegal in our state, but during this particular act he clipped the car and forced it into oncoming traffic. The resulting crash killed both the driver and the passenger (and as we were to find out later orphaned 5 kids).

And our illustrious "only one" lawmaker? The one who killed two people while violating the law? Two counts of misdemeanor manslaughter, a fine and time served. Yes truly, being 'more equal' than the others does have its advantages.
