Holiday Season in SC

Beginning the day after Thanksgiving, South Carolina residents will have a 48-hour period when they can purchase guns, shotguns, and rifles tax-free.
Naturally, "Freedom States Alliance" spokesmodel Scott Vogel has a hissy fit.

Take it easy, Scott--if you like, we'll be happy to support a tax-free weekend on these, assuming you don't already own one.

There's an expression in that article I don't remember ever hearing before. Anybody know what a "fixed-cartridge" firearm is?

Apologies if that turns out to be a stupid question: I've only been shooting for 40 years or so and don't know everything yet.

I believe that 'Fixed Cartridge' is an archaic term when applied to small arms but is still used in artillery. It simply refers to a cartridge where the projectile, propellent and primer are loaded as a unit. This is in contrast to the paper cartridges of muzzle loaders, or heavy artillery where depending on the gun any or all of those components might be loaded seperately from the others.

Yeah, that's what I hoped it meant, but couldn't be sure. The word "fixed" threw me; I wasn't sure it didn't somehow refer to the way the cartridge is secured in the weapon.

Thanks.

Don't feel bad about the fixed cartridge thing.. A lot of reporters use archaic terms such as "toting" or made-up gibberish like "spray-fire" when writing gun stories. It's like old records that say "IN STEREO" which was cutting-edge... in the 1940's!!
