There are all kinds of statistical tricks going on to derive the above "claim," and John Lott shows us how they do the con.
There's one other factor, and that's the definition of "ownership," which is a legal and moral term. Mere "possession" of a gun does not qualify for the term any more than being a carjacker makes one a car owner.
No matter: Our Fourth Estate Fifth Columnists are on the job making sure the hive mind is saturated with the lie. See for yourself how many iterations have been picked up by the Google News feed alone, and then realize the message is also being propagated by TV networks, blogs, social media, etc.

I'd bet that if we eliminated all police officers a study conducted thereafter would show that none had been killed by gunfire.
