Sadly, it explains a lot.
The Democrats see this as a War.
The Republicans see this as a contest.
So, the War on ____________.
The Left really are waging a war on fill-in-the-blank.
Most everyone else are clueless and scared. The "Kick the can down the road" attitude did not win America's Independence.
But try and convince Karl Rove of that.
Unfortunately, there is no impetus for either side to change. They are firmly rutted (not a typo) in their mindset. I believe the only way out is for a fire-in-the-belly independent party, backed by a non-apathetic voter base, to "invade" the government, from local to federal.
But that will never happen and I'll hopefully be gone before the country takes the next two steps, the last being over the cliff's edge.
