If you're on Team Totalitarian, being in-your-face about ignoring laws you'd put "little people" away for is one of the perks.
Here's Congress's November letter reminding ATF of their database restrictions and the response telling them to "be assured that ATF always conducts a rigorous review to address issues raised through the public comment process."

^ This. The Second Amendment was designed as the failsafe for when representative government fails. Expecting representative government to defend in on our behalf is missing the entire point.
