This Day in History: May 8

May 8, 1778 at Bordentown, New Jersey - In May 1778, General Clinton was preparing to evaculate Philadelphia and return to New York via New Jersey. To secure the crossing of the Delaware River, Clinton sent a corps of light infantry to destroy the Pennsylvania Navy that was moored at Bordentown and White Hill (Fieldsboro). On May 8, 1778, the British Force landed at White Hill, finding a few of the Pennsylvania boats already scuttled. As the British Force marched from White Hill to Bordentown on the Burlington Road, they were met by two companies of militia with an artillery piece. As the British formed, the militia fired one volley and fled into Bordentown. The British immediately marched into Bordentown and destroyed those vessels that had not already been scuttled. Local loyalists directed the British to the homes of Colonel Borden and other influential rebels, which they burned. Their dark deed complete, the British retired to Philadelphia. Matthew Spillane, a lieutenant who works in the dispatch center and made about $272,000, was scheduled for an eight-hour overtime shift on July 17, when he was supposed to direct the towing of vehicles around the city.

But at 2:45 p.m., an hour and 15 minutes before his overtime shift was supposed to end, police say he was at home, where he accidentally discharged his department-issued gun.

Spillane, who was not injured, was never disciplined. He declined to comment through a department spokeswoman. [More]

This Day in History: May 6

When the Continental Army paraded on May 6, 1778, to celebrate the French alliance with America, von Steuben received the honor of organizing the day's activities. On that day the Grand Parade became a showplace for the united American army. Cannons boomed in salute. Thousands of muskets fired the ceremonial "feu de joie," a running fire that passed up and down the double ranks of infantrymen. Cheers echoed across the fields. The good drilling order and imposing appearance that the troops presented during the Alliance Day ceremonies demonstrated their remarkable progress in improving their abilities as a unified, fighting force capable of standing up to the British Army. Washington, with von Steuben's aid, had made an army of the Continental troops. With their French allies, the Americans could now proceed with the war, which would rage on for many years. [More]

Cram a couple extra pairs of socks in with your gear.

Great job on his part, and I mean that sincerely. He acted like a true hero.

And it's nice to see the headcase was ultimately "persuaded" to act rationally.

Thing is, and the reason this is an "Only Ones" story: Good luck to anyone without connections in SoCal being "permitted" to carry the most effective means of said persuasion.

The shoppers are damn lucky the deputy was there. And the bipolar maniac from hell is damn lucky someone didn't figure out there are all kinds of "weapons" that can be improvised in a Target store, particularly over in sporting goods, hardware, and lawn & garden. While possibly lacking the persuasive power of a gun to stop the violence NOW, they could very well have resulted in her dashed brains and a call for "Clean up on aisle two."

Everybody here is aware like that in public, right?
