We're the Only Ones Exerting Pier Pressure Enough

An off-duty sheriff's deputy is under investigation for allegedly firing a gun on the crowded Redondo Beach pier during an argument with his girlfriend. [More]
I know that pier well. It used to be a walk from our house. We've patronized many of the places there, for years, including the restaurant mentioned in this story. We've taken the kids there many times, always seeming to wind up in the Fun Factory arcade.

And then you have this stupid bastard endangering families because--because what, he's a frickin' armed headcase with a badge?

Good luck trying to get a carry permit if you live in Redondo. Only "Only Ones" can be trusted there. You're at their mercy.

His psycho mug shot sure looked familiar, inspiring a "separated at birth" insight:

They'll see and they'll know and they'll say "Why he wouldn't even harm a fly."

Homeland Security

The Preamble is a statement of political purpose, a legal mandate and requirement, and a strict rule of interpretation. All the powers and disabilities (that is, absences of power) that follow in the body of the Constitution are to be construed in light of, and to be employed so as to advance, all of the goals the Preamble sets forth, not to thwart, subvert, or ignore any of them. I'm sure State Sen. Karen Peterson, D-New Orleans, who "voted against the bill" would be real useful in a situation where someone ignored the damn law and did what they felt like.

Still, perhaps the politicians are focusing on the wrong weapon:

Churchgoing Lilian Wilson...was found by the pastor of her church Central United Methodist in Hamlin, Ark., Sunday afternoon...

Who Ordered the McDonald's Combo?

NRA-ILA's Chris Cox has a column about the McDonald case in the July issue of Guns & Ammo. It's not online that I can find, but here's something I'm having trouble with:
This month, the Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling in the combined cases of McDonald et al. v. City of Chicago and NRA et al. v. Village of Oak Park, Illinois, challenging Chicago's and Oak Park's handgun bans...The two Illinois cases, now commonly referred to as McDonald, follow the Court's landmark 2008 Heller decision, which struck down Washington, D.C.'s handgun ban on Second Amendment grounds..."
Can anyone point to where the High Court accepted any case other than the McDonald case filed by the Second Amendment Foundation? Because they did not accept the NRA's case for review.

I'm trying to square the G&A claim Cox makes about "combined cases" with this:
The Federal District Court, though not combining the three cases, acknowledged that all three were substantially the same lawsuits, and accepted Gura’s case rather than allowing all three to run through the court simultaneously, which is not uncommon.
Sorry, but I've just seen too many times where credit has been an issue--and it's never been due to SAF.

And yeah, I'm aware of Paul Clement's due process argument. That still doesn't mean the cases were "combined."

From the kind anxiety expressed in your letter as well as from other sources of information we discover that our enemies have filled Europe with Thrasonic accounts of victories they had never won and conquests they were fated never to make. While these accounts alarmed our friends in Europe they afforded us diversion. We have long been out of all fear for the event of the war. I enclose you a list of the killed, wounded, and captives of the enemy from the commencement of hostilities at Lexington in April, 1775, until November, 1777, since which there has been no event of any consequence.
