BREAKING NEWS: ATF employees given directive for congressional inquiry/subpoena responses
One read of this could argue that Headquarters is trying to do the right thing, although a special directive to remind professional law enforcement employees that they must answer subpoenas completely and truthfully seems...curious.This evening's Gun Rights Examiner report confirms what flows downhill.
Another read, especially in light of the news that top managers in ATF's Phoenix office have been replaced and key "Gunwalker" figures have been moved to Washington, points to all the wagons being circled, and to the extent they can be controlled, responding employees will have everything vetted by a legal damage control team answering to the very top. WLS Radio: Grassley saw memo to Holder from top aide approving Gunwalker
He says he has seen a memo from a top aide to Attorney General Eric Holder, approving a plan to sell guns to Mexican drug gangs, in the hope the sales would yield evidence of crimes in Mexico. [More]UPDATE: WLS has pulled the quote from the story on their website about Grassley claiming he saw the memo. Mike Vanderboegh advises the recording does not contain such a statement. I am leaving this post as originally written rather than pulling it down. Until this is cleared up, treat the original WLS claim as unfounded. I sent the link to this article to WLS reporter John Dempsey, saying "A clarification/for-the-record quote on why it said that would certainly be appreciated."
Minimum Standards
Since judges were typically handing out sentences of less than a year for straw purchasers and just over a year for providing false information on a firearms application – the most common charges brought against gun traffickers – U.S. attorneys said that it wasn't worth their time to prosecute cases with only one or two charges against the defendant. The attorneys told ATF that if they wanted a gun-trafficking case prosecuted, the defendant needed a minimum of 10 to 20 separate offenses against him and there needed to be a tie between a gun the defendant had purchased and at least one violent crime. What I would like to see discussed here is the disagreement on the school zone claim.

The NRA "misstates" that [the "shall issue" ] bill has the additional benefit of eliminating Wisconsin's 1,000 ft. School Zone nonsense. Both bills bring it down to just the school property. (See the last sentence of page 2 onto page 3 of the Constitutional Carry legislative bureau's summary.)See:

Preoccupied today with making medical facility arrangements and interstate medical escort flight transport for my father.
I know there's a lot of Gunwalker stuff going on, what with the hearings and all, but at this point I'm just worn down and my heart ain't in it. Someone else will need to cover that today (Mike, Dave and Kurt).

On May 3, Lt. Col. John Laurens and a 250-man detachment of the North Carolina Light Infantry were on a mission to bring back the Patriot rear guard before the British cut them off. When they encountered the British, Laurens chose a bad position for his troops. The British fired long-range artillery at the Patriots, who were powerless to do anything. Unauthorized Journalists
On Saturday evening at a Second Amendment Foundation reception, that point was brought home when the pair of bloggers who uncovered and then doggedly pursued the story that is now the "Gunrunner/Fast and Furious" scandal...I almost hung up on a snotty CNN producer some months back when he deferred investigating Gunwalker unless we gave up our sources to him because they "need to be more careful than bloggers."
Their fine work, individually and collectively, may well be the tipping point that convinces industry leaders that the new media contains both solid writers and responsible journalists, despite the fact most don't have business cards with familiar logos or mastheads. [More]
Of course the commie statist dinosaur media solution is government subsidies, along with a "progressive" tax for those who "overproduce information."
