Preaching to the Choir?

Sorry, I differentiate between the audience and the choir, the latter being the people actually making a commitment, spending time and doing something.  Beyond posting comments. [More]

As for spreading the message beyond gun owners, even if Google doesn't remove one of my pieces from its news feed, I can only do so much, and use what platforms I have, including social media. Beyond that, it's up to people who get value from the work to share it with a wider readership.

It's not like I've made a secret of what I ask for from them.

I can think of a lot of ways to get the word out beyond the niche. I'm sure plenty of WarOnGuns regulars can, too.

The question is, will they? Be part of the choir...?

Fort Hunt Park, Virginia, 19 April 2010.
Writing about the fictional run-up to a civil war, I am trying to avoid a real one. I hope people will read Absolved and class it as a "useful dire warning" as David Brin calls the genre. By warning folks of the unintended consequences of their actions, I hope to avoid them myself. And, oh, by the way, for those of you who have been flogging me about when Absolved will be done -- here it is. (Holds up a thumb drive.) My part is done, and it will be sent off to the editor and publisher next week.

Those track with another, comment rejected from an earlier piece I wrote when Mike was hospitalized and the doctors gave him a month to live:
Cav Med said... Your excuse-making about “Absolved” omits the little fact about Mike telling the world at Fort Hunt in 2010 that the novel was complete and sitting on a little thumb drive that he held up and waived around. Watch the video; you’ll see him say that. As one of his raving defenders, you must also know what happened to the $ sent for the pre-sales of the novel as well.
Because fuck all of you fraudulent "No More Free Waco" faggots.
Evidently there is a seething hatred and resentment this defect intends to carry with him to the grave.

He's referring to this.

And ignoring Mike's mea culpa directly addressing that, and the subsequent encouraging discussion that took place over five years ago. It's a dead non-issue, at least for normal people.

But not for this worm. He's evidently consumed with a need to piss on the memory of a better man when presented an opportunity.  And, naturally, to do it anonymously.

I'm done with you, Cav Med or Huma, or whatever you want to call yourself to avoid personal accountability for revenge attacks against a dead man you still feel compelled to make. That says a lot about what you must be like in real life. And talk about living in your head rent-free.

If you've been financially injured by Mike's actions and stiffed on an"Absolved" deposit, sue his estate. But I've allowed your best shots here and now you're done -- no more comments for you.

You can slither away now.

Captain's Log

A Heartstring-Tugging Non Sequitur

Received via email, coincidentally right after my latest Oath Keepers piece:
Hallett, Ryan <ryan.hallett@grey.com>  Today, 9:14 AM
Hi David, Racism and discrimination are haunting America’s conscience. Anti-immigrant sentiment, often based in racist and hateful ideology, is on the rise in our country, but few of the “haters” realize that approximately 11% of all U.S. veterans come from an immigrant background. Veterans have made real sacrifices for our country and are among the most respected and honored Americans, which is why Southern Poverty Law Center is partnering on Vets Fight Hate, a campaign to urge Americans to think twice before judging people who are different than they are and whose stories they don’t know or understand. Through Vets Fight Hate, immigrant veterans are responding to hateful tweets by sending an inclusive message of peace and unity to positively impact our fractured society and fight back against those spreading hatred. You can view the powerful new PSA here. Additionally, visitors to vetsfighthate.com can sign up to receive more information on the campaign and learn how to get involved. Either way, I hope you will consider sharing this with your readers. Don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s any additional information I can share. RyanGrey Group Disclaimer
Ah, I see -- their video says they've "identified haters with a large group of followers and fought back with personalized messages."

Ryan is calling people like me a racist and a hater. That's an old SPLC fundraising strategy. So is setting up an Astroturf organization with a resonating name. And teaming up with a slick, well-funded Grey Advertising propaganda campaign featuring "the most respected and honored group in the country" has produced a campaign intended to shame and to silence.

So "Hi" back, Ryan.

To claim the basis of my concerns is hate and racism is insulting and ignores the actual issue, which your "outreach" avoids.  So you get the same challenge as everyone else:

In addition to explaining away the California experience, produce credible data – something that can be independently validated – that “amnesty” and a “pathway to citizenship” for MILLIONS of foreign nationals in this country illegally (and even legally, with current culturally suicidal policies) WILL NOT overwhelmingly favor “progressives” and anti-gunners. Show us your sources and methodologies for determining this WILL NOT result in supermajorities in state and federal legislatures that will be able to pass all kinds of anti-gun edicts. Show how this WILL NOT result in nominations and confirmations of judges to the Supreme and federal courts who will uphold those edicts, and reverse gains made to date.

Notice I didn’t ask for platitudes or for anecdotes about exceptions to the rule, or about who is turning up in increasing numbers at gun stores and ranges – that doesn’t matter if he can’t point to a corresponding overriding shift in voting trends. I didn’t ask for wishful speculation about how education and outreach programs MIGHT help bring more over to the NRA side. I'm asking you to show how all credible estimates putting the disparity at over 70% Democrat and anti-gun are wrong (and how the needle barely moves in the right direction after 20 years).

You lobbed the ball over here, Ryan. It's in your court.

Vanderboegh Update

Mike and Rosey in much happier times...
This question came up in my last post about the planned memorial for Mike:
What happened to all the donations sent in for a grave stone?
Per Rosey:
The monument has been seated since late August.  They had to wait until they could put the death date on it.  I have pictures but I have yet had the courage to go see it in person.  Its seated near a church they had planted there with 2 park benches flanking it.
Sadly, she now finds herself battling cancer of her own. If you'd like to help, You can send checks, money orders or cash to:

Rosey Vanderboegh
PO Box 926
Pinson, AL 35126

She's also evidently getting some help bringing the long-awaited "Absolved" into being. I've received some incredibly ugly and ignorant correspondence on that from bitter losers of no consequence, accusing me of knowing about pre-order funds, ignoring the fact that the man was long and painfully dying, unable to sustain focus and never satisfied with the end product. All of that resulted in his stated intentions to finish the book being thwarted time and again.

If any want to argue with that, they can go to hell, and they're not worth my time to acknowledge. My understanding is the "final" was on a thumb drive that cannot be located. How that will be worked around I cannot say, but I stand ready to help with promotion if and when appropriate.

UPDATE: For anonymous cowards who wonder why their comments won't be posted... Go desecrate somebody else's grave.

I Hate to Say I Told You So

For decades, gun rights were a somewhat tricky subject for Democrats running in what used to be a red state, but demographic shifts and the voting power of populous Northern Virginia has allowed Democrats to make calls for tighter gun restrictions a key part of their platform, even if it means risking the ire of the politically powerful gun-rights group headquartered in Fairfax.
