The John Doe Times

My first mention of Mike Vanderboegh on this blog was when I reposted his "You Can't Repeal the Law of Unintended Consequences" as a guest editorial. I began posting more and more of his stuff, but WarOnGuns is my journal and I soon was pressuring him into starting one of his own. He introduced Sipsey Street Irregulars in November 2008.

Before I'd ever heard of Mike he was posting on another effort, an internet newsletter called "The John Doe Times," focused among other things on the Oklahoma City bombing. You can find references to it on SSI, but Malwarebytes blocks his links to Constitution.org. I don't know what causes that (although it wouldn't surprise me to learn some would rather people not read it), but do note putting such links into the Wayback Machine lets me bring up many of them with no warning.

Over the weekend I was approached with another way of accessing Mike's stuff using that resource.

"Yesterday marked 2 years since Mike Vanderboegh passed," correspondent Ken Bliss told me. "I decided to dig into the Wayback archives and bring back to life his online works, as much as I could find, and properly archive them. They can be found at:

Two years.  Dang. I guess it's been that long.

"I added everything I could dig up so it doesn’t disappear from history.  Its quite a bit and I’m still looking for more," Bliss explained. "I knew Mike for decades (helped him catch John Doe 2, aka Brescia) and missed some of this writing somehow.

"I'm sure I missed stuff some others might have from the early year," he added. I would volunteer to add anything else anyone has that I didn't include."

What a good effort, one deserving of the gratitude of all who got (or will get) value from Mike's work.

To some, this could be an introduction to the man. To others, it could be like getting a new lease on Sispey Street for those who miss regularly going down it.

'Elder' Abuse

When first learning about the initial reported tabulation discrepancy, I dismissed it from being the result of fraud. My response to a couple different people who sent me the link at that time was:
I'm a longtime PEO (Precinct Election Official) in Ohio and there are pretty good validation and audit procedures in place.  This smells to me more of VLM (VotingLocation Manager) incompetence / laziness that got revealed once the Board of Elections took over. If corruption was involved, Republicans had to be a part of it -- we get partnered one-on-one with the other party at the voting locations and everybody has to sign off on safeguards and results . In re validating absentee ballots or provisionals, that takes place above my pay grade, but again, it's not like the process isn't bipartisan.
This is a whole 'nother animal. If what this new report says is true, this is registration fraud that precedes the chunk I'm involved in, and it's on Jon Husted to make prevention and prosecution his top priorities.

Black Powder Blues

As a police officer and chief investigator for the Stark County Coroner’s Office explained, federal law did not require Claren to undergo a background check to purchase the replica of the antique firearm. However, it appears that Ohio's state law did require a background check. [More]
This just came across the transom as I was preparing to call it a week and I don't have much time to spend right now. I confess to never considering this before having never been in the market for one, but ILA seems to agree:
Antiques and Replicas - Antique and antique replica rifles, shotguns, or handguns are treated like modern arms for possession, carrying and purchase purposes.
I don't see where that language appears in Ohio Revised Code. What I found there says:
(L) "Dangerous ordnance" does not include any of the following: (1) Any firearm, including a military weapon and the ammunition for that weapon, and regardless of its actual age, that employs a percussion cap or other obsolete ignition system, or that is designed and safe for use only with black powder;
Well that certainly confuses the issue.

I have no idea how PLCAA would factor into any of this for civil protection, or what  the extent of damage to the company will be if it turns out this has been an ongoing practice rather than a one-time slip-up, and if this opens a door to criminal charges.

Anybody with knowledge about this know the relevant ORC section or have experience/insights? I'll make a point of checking comments over the next few hours if you do.

And none of this alters a fundamental truth.

I missed this when it first posted.

And no, it doesn't contradict anything I say in my challenge, which acknowledges "anecdotes and isolated examples" exist.

My contention is that everything the government does, including about immigration, is illegitimate unless it fulfills the mandate of the Preamble, especially "to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity."

Welcoming people who will support and contribute to that is absolutely consistent.

It brings to mind another piece I've been meaning to link to, one that  defines the qualities of those who will become liabilities or assets, and is an insightful and true article deserving of your cognizance and sharing:
"Presumably the qualifications for entry and naturalization will be whether those who wish to enter demonstrate a capacity to adopt the habits, manners, independence, and self-reliance of republican citizens and devotion to the principles that unite the American people. Furthermore, it would be unreasonable not to expect that potential immigrants should possess useful skills that will ensure that they will not become victims of the welfare state."
