Dear ParentLine: Our nine-year-old son has a best friend whose father has a gun collection...But we really feel uncomfortable letting our son play over at the boy's house.
Are there any suggestions on handling this diplomatically?
— Gun shy
Perhaps someone can think of an appropriate suggestion or two, not only for "Gun shy," but also for the moron dispensing the one-sided hysterics. All of mine seem to involve improbable physical acts.

Advise the parent to teach their children gun safety, respect and Freedom IN THEIR HOME so their children will be safe where ever they go, now and for their future.
I did not see the article but I can only imagine the answer.
In my experience, and I'll bet, respectfully, most of the serious collectors those of us reading this know are the most gun safe of gun owners.
I have 4 kids ages 8 - 21 so I think I speak with authority when I say that kids are fascinated by guns. By indulging the interest, you create respect not recklessness.
From the time my first child was cognizant, I wanted to be sure he was safe where ever he was, at whatever friends house he happened to be vising to play at.
I never ever worried about my child finding or playing with a strange gun because my child(ren) had been taught the right, age appropriate way to respond to finding firearms from day one.
As a result I never feared that my children, at your house, finding a firearm left out carelessly would ever do anything but get an adult.
I taught (and continue to teach) my children to respect guns and look forward to ownership and all it's rights and implications from the beginning so I never worried that you might have left a gun out.
My kids don't have to experiment with a gun at a friends house because they can "play" with guns any time with dad. Just ask.
I brought (and I am bringing) my kids up to be proud Americans, respectful of the inalienable right that preserves all other rights.
If a parent wants to be sure their child is safe at a friends house teach gun safety and love of freedom. You will always know your kids are safe........at their friends houses - the police and the accelerating police state - that's another story and that is where teaching firearms safety / love of firearms / love of freedom go hand in hand.
Firearms are a great bonding activity between parents and kids on many levels. Buy more guns before you can't, teach your children to use them. Teach them gun safety and you will detstoy the potential for your children to be harmed at a friends house.
The heritage that flows over the sights of a firearm gives you an outstanding platform to bolster the republic through your future generations and pass on the importance of being a citizen instead of a subject. There is so much here for a parent, their children and the future of our country.
In this way your children will be safe in the short and the long term. This training will serve your children and your piece of mind in elementary school and your grandchildren and the republic in the future (I hope).
