Excellent letter from
Russ Stewart, who tells me and reminds us all:
People need to know that local newspapers love to foster debate on issues. Letters to the editor are great, but full editorials are much more effective. People with a little writing talent and a somewhat silver tongue can often get an editor agree to publish up to 600-700 words. I think it is very important for us to convey to the general public that we are done backing up, and that we are ready to engage in civil disobedience to protect out liberties.

Thanks Chris! I'm just trying to do my small part. I really think the anti's attempt to "close the gun show loophole" is more dangerous than the so-called "assault weapon ban." First, because it focuses on a tiny subculture it can avoid too much scrutiny. Second, but most important, it is a back door gun registration scheme. Lots of gun owners don't realize the danger that lies down the path of prohibiting private transfers, and I predict Obama and his democrat-controlled congress will waste no time introducing such a bill. Then the sparks fly!

I think you spoke for many of us. Should such a law come to pass and affect NH, I can say it'll be ignored by numerous others. Should my father worry about passing on his firearms to me once he get's a little more on? I think his response will be they can kiss his @$$.
A small lesson in history.
When prohibition took effect and the sale of alcohol became effectively prohibited for common sale millions of otherwise law abiding citizens simply chose to disregard the law. They brewed their own or patronized bootleggers rather than submit to what they considered an unreasonable infringement on their lives and actions. We're not talking addicts or career criminals here, but people like my grandfather who later in life told tales of the batches of dandelion wine he cooked up in the basement just because the government told him no.
And the true cost of that prohibition? Massive influx of cash into the hands of organized crime and a fundamental change in what up to then had been a respect for the law. So here we go again only it's not just about a drink or two it's about a fundamental right of all free peoples, one they want to turn into a privilege that can be granted or restricted at will.
Okay, so how to direct my missives?
I live in a small town. Get 400-600 words into shape for an editor to stuff into the paper? I'm willing to bet I could do that.
But that local paper reaches maybe 25000 eyes who, for the most part, agree with me.
Who do I target and how do I target the people that need convincing? What helps me in Texas get published in the NYT and Chicago Sun Times? How do I make the Washington Post not throw my submission into the trash?
