It may surprise you to find I agree with Sheriff Doyle, and I'm not playing "Monday- morning quarterback" for the officers' actions/inaction.

What I will criticize is the perception that the police will protect you. That and the way much of California, particularly Marin County, makes it highly improbable that any but an "Only One" will ever legally have a gun on their person in a public place with which they can defend themselves.

I probably should know more before assuming this is an "Only Ones" story. I know it can be a slippery slope, and I know there are other ways to deal with things, but there are times and situations where I believe a man ought to be able to punch another guy out for inappropriate behavior directed at himself or a loved one. I wouldn't want to deny that consideration to Lt. Sherman just because of his job.

Bloomberg on Meet the Press

Part of my promotional efforts for the Gun Rights Examiner columns is social networking. As such, I make attempts to outreach using stuff like Digg, Twitter, Facebook...the latter being probably the most useful because it allow for more meaningful interaction with other RKBA proponents.

The following is a post by Jake Syma on a recent Bloomberg media op that he addressed to John Pierce and me. I thought it was well stated and made an irrefutable point, and Jake has allowed me to share it here:

I don't know whether either of you caught it this morning... Michael Bloomberg (NY, NY) and Cory Booker (Newark, NJ) on MTP talking about (among other things) guns.

David Gregory threw an adulatory softball question at Bloomberg, asking about a "major victory" he recently scored over the NRA (regarding the Thune Amendment). He then allowed Bloomberg to talk a bit about the organization he's a part of, "Mayors Against Illegal Guns."

I quote him there to make the point that *they* made the point of stressing the org is not against GUNS, per se, but is only against ILLEGAL GUNS... never once considering the fact that killing the Thune Amendment would be "exceeding MAIG's charter," so to speak, if it was *only* against illegal guns... since the Thune Amendment wasn't *about* letting [so-called] "illegal guns" cross state lines.

Then there was more of the standard BS fare regarding the [so-called] "gun show loophole," but the response to that has gotten to the point that it's all "copy-and-paste" now (that is, boilerplate).

The "killing the Thune Amendment" portion may or may not be article-worthy, but I thought I'd at least pass it along.

Proper Etiquette When in the Presence of Your Betters

“On Monday, August 3, 2009 at approximately 9:00 AM at the North Pavilion the disrespectful attitude you displayed to the Mayor was unacceptable,” George Edmunds, the city’s acting director of Parks and Recreation, wrote in a Monday, Aug. 3 suspension notification memo issued to Moye. “The Mayor indicated that this was not the first time that you had not acknowledged her when you came into contact. This type of behavior will not be tolerated and is detrimental to the department. Your actions have caused irrevocable damage to the welfare of the department and your fellow workers.’’

In the memo, Edmunds also uses terms such as "insubordination" and "disgraceful" to describe Moye’s failure to greet Deerfield Beach Mayor Peggy Nolan. [More]

SCOTUS Gets Excuse to Dodge

On Wednesday, the Ninth Circuit Court voted to review en banc a three-judge panel decision in April, extending the Second Amendment right to have a gun for personal self-defense so that it would restrict or nullify state, county and city gun control laws. Who's surprised that rather than just recognize and protect our unalienable rights--the whole reason we feed these bastards in the first place--that ritual is given more importance than the reason behind it?

So now SCOTUS can sit on its hands, continue to allow injustice and deprivation of rights to exist unchallenged, and allow the pot to continue its gradual progression to full boil.

Truth is, the only way those in power ever cede it is when costs of not doing so exceed benefits. Nobody thinks they're going to voluntarily just give it up because it's the right and moral thing to do, I trust...
