Book 'em, Danno

Kent McManigal has written a children's book and a liberty primer.

He asks that we all go out and buy multiple copies so he can live in the lifestyle he'd like to get accustomed to.

Believe it or not, only a few of us in the liberty movement can afford caviar on our yachts to feed all those supermodels. Every once in a while a fresh change of pine needles under the buffalo skin really helps improve the ol' morale--not to mention the homey ambiance of our yurts. And an occasional meal is pretty nice, too.

So if you're in the market to discuss liberty with kids or with yourself, why not do something voluntary and mutually profitable?

...sounds so much warmer and fuzzier than the "Young Communist League."

Gosh, how generous of the UN to define my rights for me.

Thing is, as I've observed before:

As for "law-abiding firearms owners," we must not forget that the UN recognizes no inalienable rights. Its "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" reads like a Utopian's wish list until you get to Article 29:

"(2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law. . . [and] (3) These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations."

In other words, the law is what the UN or any of its despotic member regimes say it is--as is your "law-abiding" status.

And, of course, there is no declaration that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The UN Panel of Governmental Experts on Small Arms report proclaims, "All States should determine in their national laws and regulations which arms are permitted for civilian possession and the conditions under which they can be used."

So if the answer is "none" and "never," your job is to obey.

I was, unfortunately, unsuccessful in persuading the tactical geniuses responsible for such fantastic gun rights "victories" in California. Ah well, I always wanted to have an "ilk" I could get to help me promote my "almost Islamist-like exclusionary world-view."

It's important to read them in order.

My thoughts: Tom Baugh sent me a copy of his book. Now that the holidays are over, I can give it the attention it needs (along with Dave Kopel's newest book and the Neal Knox anthology, which I also received shortly before Christmas).

Baugh is correct when he tells us the military "exists to back our national will with force." I also think in this case, his assessment that"oath keepers...will be in in an impossible situation" does not consider all factors. It does not account for the uncertainty that made troops ultimately not mow down crowds when the Shah was deposed. It does not account for a Romanian Christmas of days gone by that ended with a tyrant bleeding in the dirt, killed by troops who once enforced his will.

The only thing we know for sure is none of us can predict the future. That said, we do have an ability to affect probabilities. I'd say the largest part of whether or not American soldiers would fire on American citizens--and whether Oath Keepers can play a key part in defusing that potential-- depends on us and what we do.

Mayors FOR Guns

I received the following response to my Gun Rights Political Questionnaire out of the blue from Joel Stoner, the mayor of Macks Creek, a small town (pop. 267 in the 2000 census) in MO. I'm using the Gun Rights Examiner columns to feature selected national races, but thought this deserved mention, particularly for the great idea he proposes at the end.

1. Do you believe that the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land" and that the Bill of Rights acknowledges our birthrights?

Yes

2. If so, should these rights be proactively protected from infringement by all levels of government, including city, county and state?

Yes

3. Please give some examples of gun laws you consider constitutional.

Laws requiring citizens to own firearms for the common protection of the city.

4. Please give some examples of gun laws you consider unconstitutional.

All others

5. Does the right to bear arms include the right for any peaceable citizen to carry them concealed without a permit, as in Vermont?

Yes

6. Do you believe that Americans have a right to own, use and carry weapons of military pattern, and will you use the prestige of elected office to publicly promote that right?

Yes, the second amendment was intended for the militia, by having an armed militia the people can protect their republic. Tell me how i can help and i will do what i can to promote the ownership of "military" style weapons. Truth is all firearms are suitable for military service. I personally own an SKS.

7. Do you support or oppose registration of weapons? Why?

I am dead set against any form of registration. Registration is the first step to confiscation. See Red Dawn for evidence that registration can be abused easily.

8. Do you support or oppose licensing requirements to own or carry firearms? Why?

Rights exist without government permission, to require a license to own or carry a firearm would severely infringe the second amendment right.

9. What specific gun laws will you work to get repealed?

I would like to see a repeal of all gun laws.

10. If elected, will you back your words of support for firearms
rights up with consistent actions? How?

The City of Macks Creek has passed resolutions in support of firearms ownership. I personally have been talking to the NRA to form a Mayors who support gun rights, to counter Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns(MAIG).

Besides, it presumes that if we can only find the right incantation, the usurpers will suddenly fall into line and behave.

They ignore the clear words, proscriptions and limitations already in place--they've taken their oath and broken it--daily--with no repercussions. What makes anyone think they would follow this--or not add weasel-wording to change the meaning of what they did pass? Assuming that's the route they chose, as opposed to, say, a Constitutional convention--with all the inherent dangers that could enable...?

The problem in this case is not with the Constitution. The problem is there's no "or else," and hasn't been for each betrayal.

Correcting Course

I'll be interested to see how this one pans out. I've never been a big fan of "warning shots."

I know more politically correct gun advocates advise to let a perp walk, but that's like saying only the police should have arrest powers. Since they derive that power from us, I don't think it's illegitimate for me to hold someone I catch stealing my property.

It also sounds like once shots were fired, the homeowner should have clammed up and let his lawyer do the talking.

I know Monday morning quarterbacking is easy. Still, it's incumbent on us to think through in advance how we'll deal with a police response should we ever be involved in a shooting. It's all part of basic preparedness.

I typically resist posting on these as "Only Ones" stories--it just seems pointless and tasteless, and what more punishment could a person endure than the guilt that would surely drive a good man to lifelong misery?

So the Sarah Brady Paradise "Authorized Journalist" wants to call American patriots who believe in the Constitution "extreme," and then tell his readers with a straight face that we should consider SPLC to be "researchers," with the aura of legitimacy and honest brokerage that implies?

Stewart Rhodes asked both Mike Vanderboegh and me if we would talk to this guy--I see he he quoted Mike. He never contacted me, and I also got permission from a militia contact to pass his edress along, and likewise, he was not approached.

Well, Mr. Leonard, had you not been so hurried in your rush to judgment, you might have learned that supporting and defending "the supreme Law of the Land" is hardly the same as being "anti-government." I know you Eurostatists have a tough time wrapping your heads around the fact that an oath-breaking administration is not the same thing...

As I said to a correspondent wanting to know if the dangers of Dick Durbin ascending to the senate majority slot might make me support Harry Reid out of political pragmatism:

I think Reid is a communist and a traitor who does what he does on guns because the political climate in NV forces him to. Anyone who thinks they can make a binding deal with a communist and traitor shouldn't act surprised when they find themselves being devoured.

I'm done with political compromises--that's what got us to this point. Some of us aren't backing up any more. A lot of us. And we're pissed.

I'm unimpressed with the Durbin argument. If he gets in and wants to squeeze harder, I suppose some will obey. Just as some of us will not. Interesting times.

Freedom is not won by those afraid to take risks. And to back Reid because someone perceptibly worse might get in is not the type of attitude that will win it.

We need to look at the totality of a politician's actions. Fact is, Baucus supported Obama. Baucus supported Eric Holder. Baucus supported Sotomayor. Anyone acting like his other votes happen in a vacuum will have no one but themselves to blame when they find they can no longer breathe.

A Fundamental Disagreement

Tennessee State Guard commander Richard Hamblen said it's his Second Amendment right as part of a militia to convert assault rifles into fully automatic weapons. The Sixth US Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed. [More]

Because "shall not be infringed" is such a squishy and undefined concept...

Per Hamblen in his email to me:

...Point of clarification: ...I did not convert any guns from semiauto--all mine were remanufactured from de-milled machine gun kits. They always were machine guns, always were intended to be machine guns, and were nothing but machine guns, the "standard issue weapon", as Solicitor General Clement said in Heller, of the National Guard.

The whole point is the constitutionality of the NFA of 1934 and therefore all gun laws. The Supreme Court ruled on what is protected by the Second Amendment in Miller in 1939. All I ask is that they honor their ruling and apply it to the law. And if that ruling is no longer correct, then they need to explain, with constitutional citations, why it is no longer correct.
