This Day in History: August 16

Fought on August 16, 1780, the Revolutionary War Battle of Camden, South Carolina, pitted American forces under Major General Horatio Gates against a small British field force commanded by Lieutenant General. Charles, Lord Cornwallis. Despite numerical superiority, the Patriot forces suffered a humiliating rout, one of the worse defeats in American military history. [More]

[Fcalerts e-Update] Attention California: Help Stop S.B. 249‏

Email from The Firearms Coalition:
Our friend Jim Shults (Shults Media Relations, LLC) has forwarded a note calling attention to S.B. 249.  Yes, we checked, and yes, it's bad.  The bill would essentially outlaw any gun with a removable box magazine and do away with the "bullet button" workaround that California activists were able to enact a couple of years ago.  Not only would S.B. 249 make common guns illegal, it would require a massive gun turn-in.  If the gun turn-in is found legal, it's a violation of the Fifth Amendment as well as the Second.  On the other hand if gun owners were to be compensated for their confiscated property, it would drive the state further into a fiscal crisis.

What to do
Friends unfortunate enough to live in the People's Democratic Republic of California should immediately contact their legislators.  A good source of information is http://calguns.net and its special page, http://stopsb249.org/.  You can also follow their Twitter feed @stopsb249.  If you are outside of California and have friends, there, alert them and let them know how bad this thing is.
I wonder how many would comply with "a massive gun turn-in"?

I wonder how many will come to regret that they allowed themselves to be talked into signing up, and the ones who showed defiance were the resented minority?

UPDATE:
California State Senator Leland Yee's horrible SB 249, which would have essentially banned possession of thousands, if not millions of common semi-automatic firearms in California, has been removed from the Assembly Appropriations Committee hearing calendar.  The bill is dead for this year.  Great work, Calguns.net, Gun Owners California, NRA, and other California activists.  It's critical that this kind of bill be slapped down quickly and firmly.  As we all know, every bad idea that comes out of California eventually spreads across the rest of the country.  One great piece of news coming out of this is that there are several hard up-or-down votes to move the bill along.  Here's hoping that California activists can put a dent in their re-election hopes.

There was some controversy within the gun rights community with Gun Owners California reporting as early as Tuesday afternoon that the bill was dead.  Calguns and other groups tweeted that the news was being reported prematurely and that activists should keep the pressure on.  We'll refrain from taking sides in a local dispute, but will point out that there is no downside that we can see with the California state senate phone lines being tied up for a few hours longer.  Better the dogs bark too long than be called off too early.

Altogether a good day's work for the state of California, and the nation!  Thanks to everyone!

Gunwalking to the Sinaloas

A bunch of you have sent me this link.  My response:

Heard it before--Robert Farago of TheTruth About Guns has been writing about a drug cartel connection for some time, so these folks shouldn't be claiming credit for being the only place you'll hear about this--and this is also not the first place to report the allegations from a guy with his head in the noose.

As an aside, I've also heard from an independent source that guns were going to Mexican "freedom fighters." I have no way to independently verify that, but supposedly Univision is going to be doing a report on this.

I agree that all documents from all times need to be investigated. I don't agree with the blanket claim that everyone else is wrong, especially with the level of actual evidence vs allegation I see these people building their report around. If they have insider sources feeding them any of this, they're keeping that pretty close to the vest.

I can only base what I write on stuff I have credible reason to believe.

So naturally it will go unnoticed by most and unpublicized by the "Authorized Journalists."  And naturally, the ones bringing this to us in spite of that are struggling to keep the doors open.

A generality I've noticed: "We" have the grassroots. "They" don't.  "They" have the financial backers. "We" don't.

There is a way around that--but it means "we" need to actually be personally willing to commit effort and treasure.  Unfortunately, another generality I've noticed is that much of the professed support limits itself to making an occasional comment on a blog post--when it comes time to actually do something, be it to send a small donation or volunteer some time or send a letter or email, or even share a frickin' link, far too many figure somebody else is going to do it and the absence of their shoulder from the wheel won't be missed.

I wish I knew how to change that, but I don't.  And I fear much suffering that could have been prevented will visit us all because of it.

‘Gun Laws by State’ provides valuable resource

The website is cool. It’s easy to navigate and explore. It has a ton of readily-accessible, logically-organized and presented information. You can learn about national and state transport and carry laws, or individual state statutes. You can drill down through an interactive map, which makes understanding reciprocity easy. And they even offer a blog, where more detailed information can be shared and discussed.

Best of all is the price, because you’ll notice the link gives full site access. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column reviews a resource I believe will give a lot of value to a lot of gun owners.  See if you don't agree.

Search Me

Nope. I don't want to see any movie that badly.

I just got a report from someone in Tennessee that at least one movie theater is looking through bags and purses for firearms, and am curious about the legality of searching people in private establishments--and if doing so could be the basis for a lawsuit.

As I understand it, private membership stores like Sam's Club can, ON EXITING, check merchandise in the CART against receipts as part of an agreement you voluntarily sign, and if you don't allow it they can cancel your membership, but if any store open to the general public wants to look through your shopping bags WHEN LEAVING, you have the right to tell the employee to go pound sand. If they have strong enough suspicion you've stolen something, their only option is to call the cops--who you can again refuse giving search consent to, and it's up to them to determine if they have probable cause. And they and the store can be sued if it turns out they didn't.

I'm not sure what statutory provisions exist--and I imagine they'd vary state-to-state--for demanding a personal search as a condition of entry, and it sure seems like that could be challenged--especially if you've already purchased your ticket and it was not a clearly stated as a condition--or whether it's legal even if it was.

Understand that the report I got is, as yet, uncorroborated, so the intent here is not to gin up outrage over something that may not prove out. At this point, I'm strictly in information-gathering mode, and trying to find out if anyone else has heard of this occurring. I'll go back to my source and see if I can get more details on where this is reportedly happening, and if it's a specific chain. In the mean time, if you know of anyone doing this, please advise in "Comments."

As per United States Code, anyone “convicted in any court of, a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year” is a prohibited person, banned by federal law from owning a gun. Today's Gun Rights Examiner effort notes the government doesn't have to win to still destroy you.

Hey Kevin--I've gone six-to-one! :-)

Nah, it doesn't matter--their stupid arguments are all the same.

Say, isn't that ol' Kelvin's stomping grounds...?

It's also the locale where I had to spike a "Gunwalker"-related story from, because my source feared retaliation and backed out on me after I'd already drafted my report.

We're the Only Ones Securing the Prisoner Enough

Two Jonesboro police officers are on administrative leave after a suspect reportedly shot himself while handcuffed in a patrol car. [More]

How did that happen?

Search me.

They say they did. Twice.

Here's a little experiment: Hide a small squirt gun on your person. Have a significant other do a complete frisk and see if they miss it.  Have them do it again and see if they still miss it.

Here's another experiment:
He also said Carter's hands were still cuffed behind his back.
Put your hands behind your back and be sure to keep your wrists within an inch or two of each other (maybe have that significant other tie a piece of string around your wrists to simulate the restricted movement limits).  Access the squirt gun and then shoot yourself in the head with it.

We're the Only Ones Anti-Psychotic Enough

That's why we show up in full battle gear with a tank against a mother and her child, ready to unleash the fury of hell if she continues to defy us and we're given the order. [Watch]

That's perfectly rational if you understand what the goal is.

I Wonder if They'll Put Up a Sign?

José Can Say So

And he does.  And does it OK, except for that bit revealing his lack of formal training when he speculates about shooting a home intruder in the knee. [Read]

This contrasts well with my last entry, where it was pointed out a gun can be a great tool to overcome someone with much greater physical prowess.

One tired bit of snark used by those who would undermine our right to keep and bear arms is that gun owners are a bunch of cowards and weaklings, which certainly doesn't take into account that our ranks include people from all walks of life including athletes, ex-military, and men and women of unbending principle.  Canseco's thwarted (for now) wish to legally  carry a gun in CA can hardly be attributed to wimpiness of body or soul.

If a champion athlete who is "a 6'4" 250-pound martial arts expert" deems he would be better protected with a gun, how much more would someone who can't match him physically benefit?

A side note on the article's comments: Notice how dumb everyone dismissing him as dumb is?

Forever Young

Young Suspect Arrested In Armed Robbery Spree [More]
I don't care if the little thug is a minor. He'd already been arrested (and evidently released) twice before for robbery, had just victimized five more in a 24-hour span, and I submit if the "authoritahs" know a predator's in our midst, they're endangering public safety by not letting us know who he is.

There is an important  point worth taking away from all this:
“I could have easily handled him but because of the gun he had in his hand I couldn’t do anything.”
Disabled, elderly and other potential victims take note, because that door swings both ways.  An assailant's physical advantage can be overcome with one finger.
