All in the Algorithm

Up until two days ago, if you'd clicked on the "In the News" widget in this blog's left sidebar, which links to a Google news feed search for my name, the initial results would have gone to my AmmoLand articles, with the most recent on or near the top. This has been that way for years and has been a way to route readers to my articles.

It's been changed, so instead, it gives preference to articles that mention my name, or in one case, someone with the same name in a two-year-old article from a local news channel (and I feel sorry for that guy and hope my work hasn't caused him any grief). Bottom line, you have to get a couple pages in to start seeing my stuff appear with any regularity and the effect of this is that already limited-readership articles are now even harder to find.

Forgive me for considering past disconnects and wondering if there is intent in that, not specifically toward me, but toward all who advance alternatives to the approved narrative.

Unbelievably, so many miss that point.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen ignorant writers -- some purporting to be on "our side" -- pontificating about how "there is no right to bear arms in [pick a country]." It's as frustrating as those -- again, from many supposed "pro-gunners" -- who say 2A is "granted" (somebody tell Lone Star Gun Rights?), and my "favorite," rice bowl gun groups sending out hysterical fundraising alerts telling members how if this or that does or doesn't happen WE WILL LOSE OUR GUNS!!!

Well, They Do Admit to Being Secret

The U.S. Secret Service appears to be testing our FOIA resolve for reasons only its operatives can say.

The first bump was in its acknowledgment of receipt:

We weren't asking for information pertaining to me but to the Hunter Biden gun investigation -- our FOIA request is embedded at the above link and you can see for yourself. It is hard to conceive how this is a mistaken "misinterpretation" on their part and had we proceeded without challenging that, they could have just come back and said "We have no information on him" and we'd be absolutely nowhere.

In other words, this is either grossly incompetent -- which ought to concern everyone considering what this agency is responsible for -- or it's a deliberate stalling tactic, meaning it has been directed.

Stephen corrected them and now they're screwing with us on a fee waiver, another stall, as I've got it in writing from the feds via various FOIA efforts of years past that they acknowledge I'm an "Authorized Journalist."

Stephen sent them a response. Let's see what kind of creative stonewalling they come up with next.

Stay tuned.

With Unfriends Like These...

For a product that made its top guy a multi-billionaire, Facebook really does have some crappy, limiting, and non-intuitive software from an end-user viewpoint. It's what it doesn't do but should.

I've noted before because I only use it to promote my article links, that I do not send out friend requests. I only accept them, and that's after giving a friend request a once-over to make sure the requestor looks to be interested in RKBA, and to try not to let spammers, grabbers, and purveyors of "nude photos" in. But what Facebook doesn't do is tell me who has "unfriended" me. Instead, you need to use third-party software, in this case, "Unfriend Finder."

I get notified if anyone drops me and access a screen that looks like this:

The "red" deleted me, for reasons anywhere from they deactivated their account (there seems to be a lot of that going around lately) to they've decided they want nothing to do with me. Ah, well.

I then go to my Facebook page, click on the "friends" link, and enter my ex-cyberpal's name. If it's a case of a deactivated account, this is what I see:

Since I have no idea why they did it and if they'll ever be back, I click on "unfriend." I figure if they change their mind they'll be back. As for other reasons, sometimes I see their name does not appear so no action is needed on my part.

Twitter is pretty much the same. For that, I use Who.Unfollowed.Me.

Yeah, I know about Gab and Parler and MeWe and have accounts with all, but they just don't produce enough article readership results to make it worth my limited time.

And for those of you who make a point of telling everyone you never use "social media," well, just so you realize you are ceding an effective ideological battlespace to the enemy. Until such time as it's no longer worth my while, I'll continue using it as ADVOCACY media.

UPDATE (received via email):
Kessler was denied his concealed carry permit in Albermarle County (Charlottesville, VA) by their Circuit Court judge after receiving an affidavit from the Commonwealth's Attorney of Albermarle County.  He was denied the permit because he was convicted of felony perjury for lying about the dude who 'assaulted' Kessler at the Unite the Right rally.  I'm a Virginian and 2A lover, but here in the Old Dominion, you ain't getting your permit if you're a convicted liar in open court.  Dude's a felon.  End of story. Plus the scumbag factor is off the charts for this guy.  Were there shenanigans involved?  Highly likely.... but Kessler didn't appeal the felony perjury charge and actually pleaded guilty to it... got 30 days - suspended 30 days.  He can appeal the concealed carry permit decision of the circuit court judge within 60 days, I believe.  But dude's a convicted felon... an appeal to carry in Virginia isn't gonna change a damn thing.
