Hell, I'm lucky to get readers here to even click on an Examiner link, let alone pass it on. I can't imagine how dismal a prospect it would be if I solicited for funds.

Oh, sure, once in a while I'll tell you about a book I think you might enjoy, or ask to help out with a specific case like Wayne Fincher (who, incidentally, I sent a check to before asking anyone else)...but if that was my strategy for the Mike Lupica story, wow, did I fail.

Just One Problem

Got an email forwarded from a friend:

Wasp Spray

I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn’t attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be of use...

One problem. Check the can:

It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

You could be arrested. And sued.

Me, if I feel inclined to squirt somebody in the face with wasp spray, I'm not going to be inclined to....well, I've probably said enough.

Next week as council members begin the difficult job of finalizing the budget I ask them to prioritize the dollars. The LAPD must be seen as an investment that pays substantial dividends. Fund what should be, and what council members have said in the past is their number one priority; public safety.

If you find that hard to swallow, I guess we could always cut back on parole violator costs...although I gotta wonder how much they already spent putting the non-violent "offenders" through the system in the first place.

Perhaps the true threat is people who use the force of the state to stifle alternative political expression and deprive others of their rights--and justify it based on their own self-serving "perceptions".

Nassau Handgun Ban Lawsuit Benefits Gun Owners – AGAIN!

An important new ruling from a New York intermediate appellate court found that the fundamental right to possess a handgun applies in New York. On this point, the court relied on the decision in Chwick v. Mulvey, the lawsuit that challenged Nassau County’s ban on the possession of handguns mislabeled as “deceptively colored.”

...Post-Heller cases challenging New York’s weapons laws, such as Maloney v. Rice, have been unsuccessful because the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has ruled that Heller does not apply. This is because Heller reviewed a District of Columbia gun ban and did not explicitly address whether the Second Amendment applies to the states. The Perkins decision, relying on Chwick, is thus highly significant because it bypasses the need for incorporation of the Second Amendment to the states via the Fourteenth Amendment. [More]

Texas AG Files Brief on Behalf of 33 States

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court that defends Americans’ right to keep and bear arms. The amicus brief, which was filed on behalf of 33 state attorneys general, supports a legal challenge by Otis McDonald, a community activist who lives in a high-crime Chicago neighborhood. McDonald’s work to improve his neighborhood has subjected him to violent threats from drug dealers, but city ordinances prohibit him from obtaining a handgun to protect himself. The state attorneys general argue that cities cannot simply ignore the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and impose a blanket ban on handguns. [More]

We're the Only Ones Accustomed to Lying Enough

The trooper then shoved the young lawyer, who defended himself by raising his hands. On impact, the lawyer was forced backward, injuring a finger he uses to pick chords on the guitar he plays with professional ease.

“I tripped,” the trooper now said, so accustomed to lying.

The lawyer demanded that a criminal complaint be sworn against the trooper. For hours, he waited in the lobby of the barracks for someone to take his complaint. When one was finally taken, word filtered out from state police that troopers were now seeking a warrant for the lawyer’s arrest. And they intended to file a grievance against the lawyer, too. This should be required reading for every potential juror expected to evaluate credibility of witnesses including LEOs.

It appears a commentator made an assumption and jumped to a conclusion, and Mr. Wright gently corrects him.

The Guns of Sudan

Last year, Governor Kuol asked Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit to find the means to remove permanently all the remaining arms from civilian hands. Kiir responded on May 22, 2008, with Operational Order 1/2008, affecting all ten states of South Sudan. The Order stated that, if weapons could not be confiscated peacefully, officials could use “appropriate force.”

Kiir’s use of “appropriate force,” in a context wherein most of the civilians were armed and did not intend to surrender their weapons, was tantamount to a shoot-to-kill order. [More]

We're the Only Ones Waived Enough

You must sign a waiver/consent form that gives law enforcement officers permission to stop the vehicle between the hours of 1:00am and 5:00am. The waiver states you will not hold the police agency or its officers liable for any reasonable actions that result from the vehicle being stopped, and that you will remove the decal when you sell or transfer the vehicle. I must say, the almost absolute non-reaction on the Albert Kwan story from the "pro gun" community disappoints me. Aside from a very few notable exceptions, you'd never even know about it unless you regularly read Gun Rights Examiner.

Why do you suppose that is? And do you think a newspaper is likely to care if "activist gun owners" do not?
