My wife showed me a paper she got points taken off of from her undergraduate days, from a class taught by an instructor who would have agreed. Written in red, in the margin next to a sentence about the Tigris and Euphrates was the question "What about Tanganyika?"

One of the things about host-driven conversations is that you often don't have time or opportunity to fully explore, let alone bring up, all the points you were prepared to discuss, and I'd had two there was just no chance to get into, especially since topics were expanded in the second segment. Which gave us a chance to bring up some other good stuff, including NRA, GOP candidates and "I will not comply."

The first was suggested by colleague Laocoön, who emailed:

A so-called prohibited person should have recourse to appeal an adjudication to a fair jury trial, both for the right of the individual accused and for the public to keep a liberty check on any adjudication system, especially in quasi-criminal circumventions of jury trial like restraining orders, but also in mental adjudication cases. If someone is adjudicated to be unstable and dangerous, then they shouldn't be on the street at all. They should be in an institution. And they should have timely recourse to appeal to a fair jury trial to make sure it's not Soviet style adjudication ... 

I did get a chance to touch on that, just not to focus on it.

This happened right down the road from me.

I don't know if I'd give chase or not. On the one hand, we need to understand the legal environment imposed on us. On the other, the thought of letting these dangerous reptiles go to prey on others could very well be a death sentence for someone more vulnerable, and it's not like the danger could be deemed "over" with absolute certainty.

If I did end up in this situation, aside from clamming up with the police, I'd be working on my lawyer to present the following, or some similar line I'd expect the "Only Ones" and their union reps to use to get a "department protocol" ruling on their shoots:

My client was in fear for his life. He briefly followed the home invaders, to make certain they were leaving and not regrouping for a counterattack or a different point of entry. At that point, his attacker made a motion he perceived as a renewed threat with a weapon.

I'm not sure what the laws in the UK are, but you can't intentionally expose the public to biohazardous waste, and as marathons have on-site employees and volunteers, enforceable workplace safety rules exist as well -- you know, along with a host of other regulatory reasons that make artificially importing H1-B visa Indian tech workers so much more affordable for all concerned.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Kiran compete in a triathlon, especially if the swimming segment is held off Amity Island...
