Dear Mr. Paul :

Thank you for writing me to express your support for new firearm regulations in our national parks. As your Representative, I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.

As you know, current firearm regulations permit visitors to have unloaded and safely stored firearms in our national parks. The Department of the Interior recently proposed a change to the firearms regulations to allow visitors to carry loaded, concealed firearms in national parks that lie within states whose laws allow visitors to carry concealed, loaded firearms in their State parks.

This new regulation would allow people to move freely between State and national parks with their loaded and concealed firearms. I believe this is problematic for several reasons. To implement this new regulation, the Department of the Interior must pay special attention to national parks whose boundaries lie within multiple states, such as Yellowstone and Death Valley , as this may cause confusion with which state's laws are to be enforced. Also, the Department would have to establish a reliable system to preclude all concealed weapons from visitor's centers and administrative buildings, since concealed weapons are banned from federal buildings.

Like you, I believe our national parks are recognized for their extraordinary beauty and allow Americans and visitors from around the world a glimpse of our county's heritage. I believe the park service's mission should remain focused on preserving these precious resources.

Toy Story

A gun that fires variable speed bullets and which can be set to kill, wound or just inflict a bruise is being built by a US toy manufacturer. The weapon is based on technology used to propel toy rockets.

You know it'll just be a matter of time before we read about some "Only One" accidentally setting his on "kill" in a "stun" situation.

Hey, as long as mine go fast, you can keep "wound" and "bruise." If we ever get to the point where toy ammo is mandated, it will be "time" anyway.

The People at the Office

The people at my office just don't get it. They snicker and sneer about how "paranoid" I am because I think people should be able to carry a gun. They laugh and joke about the idea that they might need to protect themselves someday from an oppressive government...

DJK shares an experience we've all probably been through--dealing with our convictions at our places of employment.

Some are more open and accepting than others, but a rule I established for myself long ago always worked well for me: I was there to work. Some can mix the personal and professional seamlessly. I've never been one of those.

If a co-worker challenges you on guns, I'd have two responses ready:

If I thought they were a jerk just trying to bust my chops, I'd let them take their shot and tell them I didn't think it appropriate to debate politics on company time.

If I liked them, I'd tell them work wasn't the place to discuss things, but if they'd like to go to the range some time...

When guns-on-campus legislation was pushed to a vote in South Dakota, the state Senate rejected the bill with the help of "no" votes from six A-rated NRA senators. Same story in Indiana. The legislation lost by a vote in the Senate because 10 senators endorsed by the NRA went the other way and rejected the idea.

First of all, is this true?

If so, what are the repercussions of this betrayal, what are the personal costs? Will anyone be made an example of?

If not, why not?

We're the Only Ones Dis-Oriented Enough

Three Chinese reporters attending a police briefing on the success of an anti-gun campaign were accidentally shot, media reports say.

An officer picked up one of the weapons on show - a confiscated home-made gun - but it went off in his hand.

"Only Ones" are the same the world over, aren't they? Then throw some "Authorized Journalists" into the mix, and who knows what wacky mayhem will ensue?

Evil Is: And It's Coming for You

We've seen what happens a gun is pulled in defense but not used.

We've looked into the remorseless eyes of a monster.

A weapon is nothing without the will and practiced skill to use it and the awareness to know when.

Many go about their routines oblivious to who is around them, that hungry eyes may be watching, and they freeze when confronted. They simply can't--or desperately don't want to--believe a predator is stalking for imminent attack. And when it springs, it's too late to save themselves.

The people we love are depending on us to know what to do. Men must be prepared and able to silence slavering beasts, or send them howling back into the darkness.

The Tools of the Trade

"The strategic plan of ATF focuses our human and technical resources on keeping the 'tools of the trade' out of the hands of violent criminals. It's been noted that registration has been slow, a mere trickle. Some attribute it to a citizenry too savvy to fall for ratting themselves out.

I don't think people who would elect the miserable excuses for "leaders" they have are that on the ball. Which means we're dealing with sheeple who don't have guns in the first place, with the oblivious who don't know first thing about anything, semiauto owners who know their guns will be confiscated, and the ubiquitous DC criminals.

That third possibility, the semiauto owner--now that's a test case. Bring a cheap one in to register it and have the police impound it. Bingo, instant standing.

Californians Need Not Apply

Dave Licht has written a protest letter to Caspian Arms, which requires gun dealers to complete an affidavit attesting:

Pursuant to California’s 2001 DANGEROUS WEAPONS CONTROL ACT, section12125, paragraph a, I hereby declare that the Caspian Arms pistol receiver(s) I am purchasing will not be sold in California, will not be kept for sale in California, will not be exposed for sale in California or given as a gift or loan within the state of California.

They have another affidavit for "Only One" exceptions:

Pursuant to California’s 2001 DANGEROUS WEAPONS CONTROL ACT, Chapter 1.3 Unsafe Handguns, section 12125, subdivision 4, I hereby declare that the Caspian Arms pistol receiver(s) I am purchasing are to be legally transferred to sworn member of Law Enforcement or the Military as described in subdivision 4.

The company, of course, can point to California law necessitating these actions. Mr. Licht points to the industry example set by Ronnie Barrett.

Why do they do it? Probably because the business helps keep them in business.

How many others do the same? I don't know. I'm relying on knowledgeable WoG visitors to educate us all.

The daughter of St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa and an untold number of police officers got free use of cars from a company with a lucrative police contract to tow and store cars, the department admitted on Friday.

Because not only are "Only Ones" more special than you, so are their kids.

I think if one of us did the same thing, they'd call it "joy riding," or more simply, "stealing."

So naturally, "the Police Board and its lawyers said no laws were broken."

We're the Only Ones Going National Enough

On Saturday morning, 40 retired officers -- many of them New York Police Department retirees -- completed a shooting course at the Markham Park gun range to qualify for a relatively new kind of concealed weapons permit that is honored nationwide.

No, of course you can't have one too. You're not an "Only One," with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, are you?

Some "Men" are Liars

Says Ruggieri: "If someone asks whether I think they should buy a gun, I say, 'Do you care if it's pink?' If you have a good and legitimate reason to own and carry a gun as a tool," he says, "then it shouldn't matter if it's pink."

They also acknowledge the ridiculous digital edit by Steven Spielberg to erase guns from ET.

The most bitingly critical send-up on that was what South Park did to Saving Private Ryan.

What have we established here, except that we're dealing with an ignorant racist who would blame us all for his personal shortcomings?

A Conspiracy Theory

Twice convicted of felonies, James Francis Barton Jr. faces charges of violating a federal law barring felons from owning guns after police found seven pistols, three shotguns, and five rifles at his home south of Pittsburgh.

As a defense, Barton and several other defendants in federal gun cases argue that last month's Supreme Court ruling allows them to keep loaded handguns at home for self-defense.

I've made my position on this clear for years--anyone who can't be trusted with a gun can't be trusted without a custodian. But this isn't about that--and I will address it in a post next week--or even about more appropriate sentencing.

I can't help but wonder if some on the side of the Enemy want to bring forth cases they know they'll lose--damage control so post-Heller limitation precedents can be established.

A Bit 'o the Blarney

Gardai have smashed a guns-for-sale racket in which suspected former members of the Provisional IRA supplied firearms to a drug trafficking gang in north Dublin.

Officers believe the suppliers were linked more recently with the dissident republican group, the Continuity IRA, but were also heavily involved in criminal activities.

Oh, be off with ye, then.

Everybody knows the IRA disarmed.

A Greenfield police officer is serving a 45-day unpaid suspension resulting from his handling of a traffic stop and narcotics investigation...

Both Jester and Greenfield Mayor Brad DeReamer defended their decision not to release details on the specific reasons for Phillips' suspension.

The Key to Her Heart

Bronx [NYC] resident William Hallowell filed suit in the Southern District yesterday claiming police and prosecutors blundered by wrongfully arresting him for an e-mail he never sent.

See, he's exchanging email with his supervisor, Robin Berson, about a key and she mistypes his edress, sending the mail to the wrong Hallowell, who writes her back message saying he'd "sold the key for 'hookers,' a 'handful' of drugs and a gun [and] also professed his desire for [her] and proposed a sexual liaison in the library."

So she complains against the guy she thought she emailed and he takes the fall. And even if he hadn't been the wrong Hallowell, what's the crime? I can't begin to tell you some of the replies I've seen for the Nigerian 419 scammers. They get a lot more graphic than "I want your sweet body against my skin" (although I may use that line on the next one who offers a wire transfer from his late father the prime minister's account).

And it takes the idiot Bronx prosecutor 4 months to clear it up? I'd ask if they know what that much time with a charge hanging over a man's head does to him, but of course they do. They count on that, to break people down, soften them up to where they just want to get it over with and will plea to enough to make the prosecutor look like a success.

That's why the thugs in power get so enraged and vindictive when they come across someone who will fight them all the way on principle.

How dare you not roll over and die when we demand it?

On Tuesday afternoon, dozens of children at a community center in Treme ran inside screaming that a lady outside had a gun.

The woman - who according to several witnesses announced that she was a New Orleans police officer - had come to the Treme Community Center to pick up a 7-year-old nephew and, for reasons unknown, became enraged at the driver of the car in front of her in the pickup line, witnesses said.

So naturally, her "Only One" colleagues let her go.

It does explain why NOPD is so intent on disarming everybody else, doesn't it?

One of you left a comment to another post a short while ago--I should have bookmarked it so I could give proper credit and get it exact, but the gist of it was, when an abusive authority pulls "Do you know who I am?" the proper response should be "No, but I can find out by reading tomorrow's paper."

A DeKalb County police officer who shot an unarmed suspect faces a murder trial and a possible life prison sentence in the only criminal prosecution stemming from a rash of police slayings of suspects in DeKalb in 2006.

Another "'impeccable record' with no prior incidents," I see. One might even describe such unblemished conduct as "stellar."

Proper Respect for Authority

I have never just posted an Internet joke before, but this one tickled me, especially in light of all the examples of abusive government agents we see on a daily basis. I searched around to see who I could attribute this to but came up dry.

A Department of Water* representative stopped at a ranch to talk with an old rancher. He said, "I need to inspect your ranch for your water allocation."

The old rancher said, "Okay, but don't go in that field over there."

The water representative said, "Mister, I have the authority of Federal Government with me. See this badge? It means I am allowed to go WHEREVER I WISH on any agricultural land,no questions asked. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?"

The old rancher nodded politely and went about his chores.

Savage to Sullivan: It's On

After attaching ties, tape and a chain to a submitted firearm in order to attain automatic fire, BATFE has refused to reclassify and return Len Savage's property. They have further demanded that he register it as a machinegun. In response, Savage has challenged them to begin forfeiture proceedings.

Here's a copy of the ATF refusal and demand. The Cliffs Notes version of what they're saying: Even if they hadn't converted it, it would be "readily restorable" because they could always put the chains, tape and ties back on. So he improperly tried to register it as a short-barreled rifle, when he should have registered it as a machinegun.

Because they're nice guys, they'll let him register it properly, but he must act now or they're going to seize it.

With that as background, here is Len Savage's response, titled "I Received Your Ultimatum":

Your letter (3311/2008-642) of July 22, 2008 informs Historic Arms LLC (hereafter the Company) that you are unwilling to consider re-examination and re-testing of the submitted firearm serial number V1. It was submitted by the Company to confirm that is was correctly registered and a request was made for it’s return upon completion of such confirmation.

Upon manufacture, the Company registered Serial Number V1 as a short barrel rifle on the ATF Form 2 “Notice of Manufacture” as is required by statute and regulations. On April 21, 2008 Serial Number V1 was shipped to FTB for verification that the Company was compliant with the registration requirements and in conformity with its classification as short barrel rifle. Your claim that it was improperly registered based on your use and addition of separate devices not submitted the Company, that are NFA firearms themselves, conversion devices, is self serving and specious.

As you are aware, the Company had no notice of a dispute in its classification of the questioned firearm as a short barrel rifle until June 10, 2008 letter (3311/2008-471) was received by the Company on June 16, 2008. That letter proclaimed that serial number V1 was classified as a machinegun for two reasons:

1). It is designed to shoot automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.; and,

2). It is readily restorable to shoot automatically.

With all due respect, I reject the first reason out of hand. The firearm, serial number V1, was designed by the Company with specific intent to prevent more than one shot with single function of the trigger.

Equally meritless is your “readily restorable” characterizations of serial number V1. The firearm now in your possession was designed by the Company with specific intent to prevent it from being readily converted to shoot more than one shot with a single function of the trigger, your use of a separate conversion device in testing proves this. Restored is a word which not further defined in statute or regulation. Websters Dictionary defines restore as a transitive verb meaning to 1) to renew, rebuild, alter; 2) to put back into existence or use; 3) to bring back into former or original state. It is axiomatic that one must completely ignore the plain meaning of the verb “restore” to accept your interpretation of the “readily restorable” phrase as it appears in your letter. It raises the metaphysical question of whether a thing that never existed or never has been can be restored. To apply any meaning to your explanation for classifying serial number V1 as a machinegun, That is more than mere distinction -It is a real difference which raises a separate controversy, albeit one in which your argument is equally flawed.

It is most gracious of you to again offer the Company an opportunity to register the firearm, serial number V1, as a machinegun. However, I reject that offer as inappropriate in that it has the potential to expose the Company to criminal liability or adverse civil action against the license. The Company would be pleased to reconsider the offer if it were accompanied with a grant of immunity from criminal prosecution or adverse civil action against the licensee.

Your suggestion for forfeiture of Company property is an excellent solution to this most unfortunate controversy. The initiation of forfeiture proceedings by ATF against the firearm serial number V1, will afford the opportunity for both parties to be heard and will provide a fair and equitable determination of the issues while preserving all processes that are due for both parties.

Accordingly, the Company awaits notice of seizure of the property and the institution of forfeiture proceedings. Historic Arms LLC requests that this is done without delay. You will be notified without delay of the Company decisions for proceeding with forfeiture action upon receipt of notice.

In other words, if he took them up on their "offer" and tried to re-register it as a machinegun without a guarantee of immunity, they would technically be able to come after him for committing "unlawful acts". His options are to risk losing an expensive piece of property to forfeiture proceedings, or to risk his livelihood and freedom defending himself from stepping into the trap of essentially being coerced into signing a confession.

Those of you who have been watching things here and in other cases we've talked about, and slogging through the myriad documents, will see what's going on--this is another significant piece of evidence as to the true nature of this agency, and another significant glimpse into the hearts and minds that run it.

Still, there is a glimmer of hope in terms of overreach repercussions they're setting themselves up for. I can't reveal my source, but I am allowed to share with you a particularly insightful observation:

It is axiomatic that ATF won't back off its classification. Thing to do is pound on the illogic of that classification when juxtaposed with the "Error Table" document [see below--DC], and how application of the same test or whatever the [expletive deleted] you call what ATF did to your upper would result in a bunch of other machine guns. Is there any reliable estimate of how many uppers like that are out there, in circulation, as non-firearms? Seems to me like ATF is playing with the kind of fire (benzene, maybe) that can't be put out with water; the only way to put it out is to let it burn, in other words.

The Ohio Inspector General yesterday released a scathing report that accused a state highway patrol post of cheating on tests used to certify proficiency with breathalyzer units...

On March 2, 2007, Trooper Anthony Maroon took that fifty-question multiple choice test. When the test giver, Craig Yanni, left the room, Maroon photocopied the booklet along with his answer sheet. Although the test is easy enough that few troopers ever fail, Maroon passed his answers to other state troopers in the Canton Patrol Post.

Senior police officers have been warned to look out for a new knife which can inject a ball of compressed gas into its victim that instantly freezes internal organs.

The 'wasp knife', which can deliver a ball of compressed gas capable of killing its victim at the press of a button, may be heading for Britain, the Metropolitan Police fear.

Then again it may not be. They haven't found any, there have been no incidents of abuse, and they have absolutely nothing to base headline-grabbing hysteria on other than it exists. That and Khalid Mahmood thinks they're "absolutely disgraceful."

A few of you using different browsers like Firefox and Safari have written and told me you're having trouble connecting to the esnips Word file I posted, so I changed the "Absolved" book graphic in the left margin to go to a post containing all currently-published chapter links.

This'll be easier for me to maintain as new chapters are released, too, and it really is the simplest solution--if I knew what I was doing, I'd have thought of it first. Fortunately, the world gives us stunningly beautiful people a pass on brains.

DC REJECTS HELLER!

District residents can start registering their guns today. But at least one very high profile application was already rejected.

Dick Heller is the man who brought the lawsuit against the District's 32-year-old ban on handguns. He was among the first in line Thursday morning to apply for a handgun permit.

But when he tried to register his semi-automatic weapon, he says he was rejected.

Bottom line, they said as far as handguns, they were only going to accept revolvers...in other words, the bottom feeders don't want their employers to have "bottom loaders."

Somebody needs to kick their bottoms.

Silly Love Songs

We're the Only Ones With Job Security Enough

The Chicago Police Board made the correct decision in suspending — and not firing — an officer who was videotaped beating a 60-year-old man handcuffed and shackled to a wheelchair, a Cook County judge has ruled.

Gosh, he had "a stellar law enforcement career," made "a terrible mistake" and he's "remorseful." The poor man is the "Only One" who has suffered enough. Why, you might even say he's the victim here.

The excuse-making only serves to enrage.

This is why they need the National Guard.

We're the Only Ones Unbiased Enough

The judge replied, as judges there often do: "I find Officer Kanapsky's testimony to be credible. He is an unbiased witness."

But the officer is not really unbiased. The more tickets he writes, the more overtime he gets. Last year, Kanapsky spent so much time in court he increased his pay by $21,000.

Really. Who would ever believe an "Only One" would be motivated by more money. For himself. To buy stuff with. And live better.

But don't worry--this isn't (technically) a violation of posse comitatus. That only applies when they've been federalized. Never mind that they serve in a dual enlistment capacity as reservists.

At the risk of crying Katrina, let me just observe that the citizen militia as envisioned by the Founders--you know, that anachronism that's "necessary to the security of a free state"--is nowhere to be found in this mix, and that's by design.

Which means we will neither be secure nor free. But plenty of opportunities to ratchet up the controls will sure present themselves.

A gun expert who testified against the government when David Olofson was on trial for loaning to an acquaintance a gun that misfired now says the government is punishing him for that testimony.

An Update from the Olofson Family

I certainly understand and appreciate those who are looking for information on David. Please be patient. Since the last communiqué, we have been doing damage control and cleanup from the flooding we had on 6/12. We will be at it for a while, like many in the Midwest and certainly a lot more who were hit harder than us. Just as in David's case, I just cannot imagine!

But we are trying to get in place a few other details, which will follow shortly, regarding some help for David. I just received a letter from David and he indicated he is doing fine, and we should not worry. I'm sorry to tell him that after what he has been put thru, we still worry a great deal. He indicated he can receive nothing 'hard covered' and is limited to 10 pages per letter - so do not be afraid to write. I am making copies of the popular blogs he frequented, and will be forwarding them to him, so if you prefer not to write to him directly, please leave a message for him and I will get it to him.

I would ask again for all not to lose sight of, as David would say, "the price of the fight for freedom". In this particular case the atrocity of having any firearm being 'made' into a machinegun. Have you written your congressmen, FBI, Attorney General, Vice-President and President??

"Anthem" Expanded

We're the Only Ones Immune Enough

Weber, who was transferred to Grand Forks, N.D., after the accident, refused to appear on the charges. Through an attorney, she claimed immunity as a federal officer and is trying to transfer the case to U.S. District Court — saying she wouldn’t be treated fairly in Cook County because of hostility toward the Border Patrol.

Yeah, that's the same crap that Lon Horiuchi pulled. Must be nice to have such a strong "immune system."
