Feigning Ignorance of the Law is No Excuse

It's an absurd and intolerable situation. Those tasked with upholding the law are arresting--and endangering-- those abiding by it. In some cases they're claiming ignorance--in others, they're apparently claiming the power to defy state law and enact and enforce their own. We need to stop it, now, before anyone else's life is disrupted, or God forbid, someone gets hurt or worse.

What the hell have they done to prepare for incident 67, aside from ensure that the only deterrent that's worked so far has been removed?

I'm sorry, but the word "sodomy" always reminds me of Groucho's "That's bigamy!" joke.

I will stress that it's legally an allegation at this point, but in this set of circumstances, the New York "Only Ones' " reputation precedes them.

We're the Only Ones Slapstick Enough

With officers in pursuit, the raccoon took off through the house, ripping up Venetian blinds, pulling down drapes, knocking over a lamp and toppling a flowerpot. Finally, Officer Daniel Ek tried to let it out the back door when the suspect apparently turned threatening.

"While unlocking the back door, the suspect ran at Officer Ek," the police report says.

"The suspect"? That's "Only Onese" for a raccoon...?

I'm sorry, but this thing reads like a scene from a "Three Stooges" short. I can just hear Curly going "Woob-woob-woob..." and see them all tearing up the place and hitting each other over the head with shovels as the raccoon outsmarts them at every turn...

Guest Commentary: Palm Pistol Unique in More than Design

Many thanks for discussing the ergonomic aspects of the Palm Pistol on your blog. These are the principle issues my design is intended to address.Seniors and the disabled are one of the most vulnerable segments of society and therefore suffer a disproportionate share of becoming victims of crime.I am unaware of any prior attempt to develop an effective self-defense firearm specifically addressing this market.

You may be interested to learn that I am in the process of applying for Durable Medical Equipment (DME) coding for the Palm Pistol. This process is the responsibility of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).Part of the effort requires a determination by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) whether the firearm is a "medical device" as defined under 21 USC 321.

I contacted the government attorney who is responsible for these so-called"device/not a device" determinations. When I spoke with him by phone after initially contacting him by email, he explained the reason he had not responded was the fact my request was unprecedented and he did not yet know how this would be handled. He further suggested this was well outside his responsibility and this would have to be decided at the very highest agency level and potentially outside the agency itself. Based on our discussion,while he could not offer any formal opinions, it seemed clear to me the agency could not state in was NOT a medical device. So the bottom line is,the jury is still out.

If I am successful in obtaining DME coding, this would be the first time a firearm could potentially be reimbursable as a DME under health insurance plans if prescribed by a physician for qualified insured's. Although it is unlikely it would ever be reimbursable under Medicare, private health insurance companies may see this as a valuable marketing tool to attract certain customers. I suspect this will make national news.

As an aside, you also may be interested to learn that both AARP and Arthritis Magazine rejected my ads for the Palm Pistol since they refuse to accept anything that relates to firearms. This is pretty outrageous given the likelihood that large numbers of their members support the RKBA and would be very interested in this product. Liberalism has become the new fascism.

I am currently refining my rough legal research notes concerning the DME coding effort. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them, and again, thank you for your interest in this novel idea.

About That Conference Call

I announced this the other day.

Nicki Fellenzer sums up her impressions and includes a recording of the entire thing.

She's right in that Gov. Blunt, who has been fairly good on guns, really didn't...uh...bluntly answer a few of the questions--mine, for instance, where I asked what incentive Republicans would have to ever change if they can go against our interests yet gun owners vote for them anyway. And I agree it will be unfair to point the finger at gun owners if the Republicans fail--if you extend that to its logical conclusion, it would also be our fault for not working for the McCain campaign, or donating money.

Bryan Pick, who makes his case in comments, points out the political realities we're facing. I understand where he's coming from and am grateful that he put this together and gave me an opportunity to participate. Also, it was nice of Chris at The Liberty Papers to record the conference call and make it available to us.

That said, my position on the election remains: I recommend voting your informed conscience, meaning taking into consideration what's at stake and realizing whatever choice you make will have an impact.

Gun Trust Lawyer: An Ergonomic Solution

As people age, they often develop medical issues that would prevent them from being able to use a normal firearm to protect themselves, their family, of their possessions. 2A Today for the USA

We talked briefly about this yesterday, where I told you a little about the video, linked to it and introduced my sidebar click-through ad.

Aaron Zelman really has done a good job--this is the perfect vehicle to introduce people to the concept of the Second Amendment and how it is their right. It leads them through the logical development, how RKBA had its ideological origins in religious texts that predate our government, how rights are unalienable...

It teaches them the concept of the militia, gives them insights into the thoughts of the Founders, and brings them persuasively into modern times--where we see the evil made possible by "gun control" through slavery, genocide and tyranny. It also shows the personal tragedy, as exemplified through the experiences and resolve of Dr. Susanna Hupp.

JPFO really has created a great tool here, one that is perfect for educating and priming people to be receptive to learn more. I urge you to watch it and, importantly, to share it.

I also urge you to support JPFO with a contribution to help them not only pay for this, but to continue their great work.

We can't continue expecting others to do things for us without giving them support. And we can't expect personal credibility for what we'll do when the chips are down if we won't make even small sacrifices while times are yet easy by comparison.

The New Buccaneers

Security analysts and the Somali government are publicly flirting with the idea of hiring mercenaries to stop the pirates that are terrorizing east Africa. Now, the notorious guns-for-fire at Blackwater are responding to the call, with a resounding arrrr!!!!!

Concerns with Blackwater domestic operations notwithstanding, I find a free market solution interesting. As long as there's no problem proving the scalps and ears turned in for the bounty are righteously harvested...and all the controls are in place to prevent abuses and ensure protection of the innocent that that implies.

Without it, what's to stop some enterprising mercenary from shanghaiing a crew, placing them on a stolen vessel, blowing it to hell and then collecting a reward? I mean, it's not like we're dealing with professors of ethics here. And what's the saying, "Dead men tell no tales"...?

Who Do You Trust?

Four ATF agents infiltrated the gang and were accepted as full members, a difficult process that requires winning the trust of the gang's top leaders over a period of months, Hoffman said.

The agents were required to live away from their families in homes set up to make it look like they lived a Mongols lifestyle, Hoffman said. Four female undercover ATF agents also were involved in the operation, pretending to be biker girlfriends and attending parties with the agents.

Not that I'm comparing the two, but what they can do to the Mongols they can do to a militia.

Beware infiltrator informants and provocateurs. As we've seen too often, being a moral and patriotic American exercising Constitutionally-protected rights is no defense.

Y'all remember George Mason? The guy who said:

Some TN Permit Holders are Now Felons

Plain and simple, Tennessee's self-defense law was in my opinion much better before the NRA endorsed legislation was pushed through with the bi-partisan help of Republicans and Democrats in the Tennessee legislature many of which, in my belief, simply did not understand existing law and therefore tried to change it in perceived but misplaced need for a "castle doctrine" in Tennessee although we have had one for many years...

The effect of the new law is that now even non-violent felons are prohibited from possessing any firearms and also from buying firearms (TCA 39-17-1316) and also from having a handgun carry permit (TCA 39-17-1351) even if they have previously had their full rights of citizenship restored by a Tennessee court. They cannot hunt with a firearm. They cannot have a firearm in their home for self-defense. They cannot work as an armed guard. They cannot work in an armed law enforcement position.

They are unindicted felons instantly on July 1, 2008 whose names are in many state databases as firearms owners.

The title-linked post is a few months old--it's the best substitute I could find for a Tennessee Firearms Association email that I don't see posted yet on their website. Here's the beginnning of their email:

Below is an opinion by ATF's legal division on the consequences of this adverse change in the law. This was not just "2 steps back" for the issue of gun rights but more like a football field.
Call not only your legislators to demand that this be changed but call Chris Cox at the NRA-ILA.

Who are the "Only Ones" We Can Trust with Guns?

How often have we been told this though, by police officials, by politicians, by anti-gun groups, by the media? Our laws have been geared to exempt police from carry restrictions in "No Guns" zones, assigning to the uniform and the badge an automatic and unquestioned trust that police are better trained, and just generally more cheerful, thrifty, brave clean and reverent than we mere mortal citizens. They are, we are told, the only ones who can handle the awesome trust of being armed in public.

No idea what to expect, really, but I will do a follow-up report.

"Obvious Stonewalling": Savage Finds BATFU in Willful Violation of FOIA Request

Ms. Graham,

In your final "final response" to my Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for "the documents and final determinations of the investigations" of the four closed investigations based on complaints made by myself or on my behalf.

Due to the poor punctuation in the response I can only assume the BATFE disclosure division meant to cite the following, which BATFE contends is exempt from disclosure under the Title 5, United States Code, Section 552(b):

b(5) inter-agency or intra-agency memoranda or letter which would not be available by law to a party other than an agency in litigation with the agency;

b(6) personnel and medical files and similar files, the disclosure of which would constitute a clear and unwarranted invasion of personal privacy;

It's a bit hard to envision b(6) as being applicable, as I never asked for personnel or medical files. BATFE can probably justify at least some of b(5); however, I don't see how the disclosure division can lawfully withhold the results of the investigations as I originally requested in September.

This is obvious stonewalling. It appears you are parsing words of the law to prevent the results of the investigations from becoming known. Your office clearly stated: "We are transferring these documents to that federal agency..." In other words your disclosure division admits it had the documents and got rid of them to prevent from complying with my lawful FOIA request? Perhaps another FOIA asking for a budget breakdown of how much money your office and the BATFE spent in man hours and all other expenses while responding to my FOIA request 08-1494 is in order? I would think the results of that would be of great interest to the U.S. Inspector General, the honorable Glenn Fine.

Ms. Graham, please respond to my original FOIA request for "the documents and final determinations of the investigations".

A man caught on camera shocking a 15-year-old boy with a taser, just for fun, was a Eustis police officer and he did it after a night of drinking with kids...

"You're gonna get five seconds. You will have two marks. These will be signature marks," Nesmith tells the 15-year-old on home video showing the incident.

Yep, it sure looks like this moron is the "Only One" with the mature and sober judgment needed to be trusted with weapons forbidden to you or me (post '86 LEO Only), and in places where you or I (school zones, bars) would not be.

Hey, now that the video has been released, maybe he can sue for humiliation...

We're the Only Ones Entrepreneurial Enough

The TSA reached a mind-boggling new low in customer service this week when it was revealed that one agent had single-handedly absconded with over $200,000 worth of travelers' belongings, primarily cameras and laptops, and proceeded to unload his booty on eBay. His latest haul: A near-$50,000 camera that an HBO employee had been traveling with.

I feel so much safer flying, knowing there are "Only Ones" out there like Pythias Brown, who make sure people like you and me (who can't be trusted) don't try slipping anything past "security."

A Rebuke from the "Right"

Similarly, Judge Richard A. Posner, in an article in The New Republic in August, wrote that Heller’s failure to allow the political process to work out varying approaches to gun control that were suited to local conditions “was the mistake that the Supreme Court made when it nationalized abortion rights in Roe v. Wade.”

Yeah, that's just what we need: "home rule" for which rights will be recognized.

Hey, who needs a Fifth Amendment when you're in Chi-Town, anyway, huh? What, this rubber hose? It's in case the suspect gets thirsty under all these lights...

We talked about the other supposed "conservative," J. Harvie Wilkinson III (and tell me that name doesn't sound like it belongs cheating at bridge at Thurston Howell's country club) a while back, and again a while back further, and I gotta tell you, they just don't make "prominent" judges like they used to.

Consider, for example, William Rawle, a contemporary of the Founders, the man George Washington wanted as the first attorney general, and whose "View of the Constitution" was the "go to" resource at Harvard and Dartmouth until the mid-Nineteenth Century, who wrote:

“No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give the Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under a general pretence [sic] by a state legislature. But if in any pursuit of an inordinate power either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both.”

We can listen to him or we can listen to Dickie and Harvie. Come to think of it, if we listen to them, we might actually resolve things sooner.

Neither Predator Nor Prey

At 200 yards, Yugoslavian SKS rifles are perfectly adequate. Purchased for under $150 each via private sales, they were equipped with cheap but satisfactory Chinese made 4 power scopes. The Russian made 7.62x39mm ammunition is not noted for its accuracy, but very much so for its reliability. With these rifles and ammunition, the eclectically-armed duo systematically wrecked the resented roadblock.

The tires went first, then sights shifted to the engine compartments. The two deputies and one of their federal confederates ran as fast as they could to the treeline, covering the several dozen yards in record time and keeping right on going deeper into the forest. The other fed foolishly hunkered down behind his increasingly gunshot gutted GSA.

Mark sent me a review copy a couple weeks back for magazine consideration, and I just have not been able to get to it yet--although I expect to get some read time in the next week. Matter of fact, when I told Matt I was going to review this, he let me know "Mark is the real deal. I spoke at last years WSSA meeting, and spent the next week with him driving around WY."

He said the two students were robbed at gunpoint by one man and the alleged gunman fled in a white, four-door Taurus driven by an accomplice.

The alleged robber covered his face with a black hood, he said.

Alvarez issued a "campus watch alert" Monday advising students to remain calm and compliant during "a robbery situation."

We're the Only Ones with "Bare" Arms Enough

I do want to say a word about open carry--a subject I've been covering more of recently because it's becoming more of a phenomenon. I write about the movement positively because I believe in the choice, but I'm actually not a big proponent of the practice. I don't like giving tactical advantages, telegraphing intel or making myself a target.

That said, if you choose to carry openly, more power to you. It's none of my damn business, although if I see you doing it, I may come up and introduce myself.

Should a campus shooting ever happen at Ball State University, Blake Graham wants the right to protect himself by firing back.

You have that right, Mr. Graham. Anyone who would deny it to you is a criminal.

Obey and they will victimize you, or disobey and we will victimize you. That's a hell of a choice to force on a person, isn't it? What kind of sick authority freak would do that to another human being?

I applaud you and your group for taking point on this at your school and bringing it into the forum of public discussion. That said, I hope you never suffer because you allowed evil, wrong-headed edicts to overrule your judgment on when possessing the means of defense is prudent. If you decide it is, I pray you're not discovered. And if you are, I hope the predominant sentiment coming from some gun owner quarters isn't that you made us all look bad.

"Total Failure"

HZ has given me permission to share his recent email to me:

Sad, sad story ....

Went to the range to enjoy the fall weather. Absolutely perfect day too ... crisp air, bright sunshine with only a hint of a breeze and the smell of fresh earth after an overnight sprinkle. The first hour or so (I lost track of time) was spent with my bolt action. I was in harmony and the groups were tight. It was time to bring out the M14.

After a few rounds I realized that I was being watched. The range was crowded but it was apparent that one individual had taken an interest in what I was doing. He finally approached and started to ask about my rifle. I quickly learned that he was a new shooter and had only recently purchased his first weapon of any kind, an AR15.

He was now very interested in my M14. It has been a long time since I have been around a brand new shooter that has been bitten by "the bug." The guy almost exploded when I offered to let him put four rounds downrange with my rifle. I coached him through the proper loading, safety and hold. He was still smiling even after the first round served notice that he wasn't shooting a .223 anymore.

He couldn't say thank you enough and came over again a little later to show off his brand new AR rifle. He was as proud as a new papa. After some more pleasant conversation he packed up his rifle, smiled and waved goodbye. He backed out of the parking space (located right behind the firing benches) and drove away. That is when I noticed his two bumper stickers. "Teamsters for Change" and "Obama 08."

He sent me this email under the subject "Total Failure," and a subsequent email implied he considered part of that failure to be his:

I was lamenting (personally ... to you) my total failure to read the person before me. I couldn't help but feel that I should have been doing something more than coaching.

No, we're not responsible for those who have so little regard for freedom and so little interest outside their own self-gratification. That said, it wouldn't hurt to be able to sound people out, and to engage and educate when appropriate, be it at a range, a gun store, or wherever the opportunity presents itself. So perhaps this lesson learned will inspire some future success stories.

Thank You for Your Service. Sorry for Your Loss. Now Put Your Hands Behind Your Back

An Army soldier on bereavement leave from her Iraq deployment was arrested yesterday at MacArthur Airport after federal baggage screeners found a loaded gun in her checked luggage, Suffolk police said.

Spc. Vonda Collier, who is from San Antonio, did not have a New York license to carry the Taurus revolver found in her baggage yesterday morning during a routine search by a Transportation Security Administration screener, police said.

That's wonderful--we trust her to deploy with access to all kinds of weaponry in the service of the state, but one little revolver for her own protection and here come the "Only Ones." Welcome home, soldier. Glad we could add to your grief.

Too bad she wasn't an anti-gun politician. Or a famous actor. Or even "a beloved comedian."

There may be a silver lining, though. Military people experiencing first-hand what the score is may not end up being a bad thing in the long run...assuming they end up being treated like the rest of us.

I don't ask much from WarOnGuns regulars--basically I limit myself to asking you to join me in an occasional letter or email, or to support something I myself am supporting. I'm asking you now to help me spread the word on this--not just now at the launch of this new venture, but as you can on an occasional basis going forward. Arms Recovered in Alleged MILF Safehouse

I was recently surrounded by thousands of them, as were many other parents with children, and I couldn't have been less fearful of violence erupting.

Yeah, see, technically, even though he's not an official "Only One," he gets a pass because technically, it's an exclusive club and we take care of our own.

Gun crime 60pc higher than official figures

The true level of gun crime is far higher than the Government admits in official statistics, it can be revealed.

...Figures to be published by the Home Office this week will massively understate the scale of the problem.

We're the Only Ones Who Just Got Tougher Enough

Pennsylvania's gun laws got tougher Friday as Gov. Ed Rendell signed a bill increasing the mandatory sentence for anyone convicted of shooting a firearm at a police officer and for crimes committed with illegally purchased guns.

Rendell signed the wide-reaching bill at the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police lodge.

What about if the shooting is defensive? And how about increasing penalties for "Only Ones" unjustifiably shooting citizens (instead of the standard "he did not violate any department policies"?)

And as far as "illegally purchased guns," does that include those bought with money taken via coercion?

I've about had it with the damned self-serving FOP and other public employee unions. Let's fight back and see how they like it when it's their ox being gored. I think it's past time we started demanding a law requiring all police to keep their service weapons locked at their police station when not on duty, with a log record to show them properly checked in and out.

I Was a Teenage Zombie

"My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.

Gee, detective, I possess all kinds of matter pertaining to schools and their functions, and I even recommend that people ignore the damn law and carry weapons on campuses when their mature judgment as responsible and sovereign citizens tells them doing so would be prudent. Anybody wants to make a felony rap out of that, let's dance.

Here's the thing--I simply don't know enough about this story to judge the merits of whether or not young Poole posed a credible threat. Grandparents calling the cops suggests they were at the end of their tether, but who knows those family dynamics? And who knows if he singled out individuals by name and outlined specific intent?

What should concern us all is the level of evidence--as presented in this news account--arising to the level of a felony prosecution. If they have the kid on a genuine threat against real people, that's one thing. But we need to make sure we're not so paranoid that we overreact and infringe on genuine freedom. And it's up to us to keep tabs on those who might do so in our name.

Who's Stealing? We're Appropriating

A small software company trying to create a program to help gun dealers comply with federal regulations now believes that the government purposefully stalled and then swiped the technology to create a copycat program of its own.

We briefly touched on this yesterday. Considering what we're dealing with, I'm still not sure why this would surprise anyone. I mean, the whole purpose of BATFU is to mess with people and their property...under threat of armed force.

It would be nice if those government watchdog "Authorized Journalists" outside of conservative media like WorldNetDaily would notice the continual outrages, but, after all, that's why they're authorized.

Looks like we'll have to work without them toward the day when thieves and murderers meet their just fate. Thing is, until that day comes, we've already been told--years ago-- about an electronic authorization system that would still allow for the culling of "prohibited persons" (yeah, I know), but completely eliminate any identifying information on purchases. In other words, it would not create one new requirement, but would actually eliminate any record of who bought what. And the damnedest thing is, it would work.

Not that anybody really cares enough to even give it a serious look...

This Day in History: October 18

On October 18, the Americans surrounded Chambly and began the attack with a cannonade barrage on the British stone fort. This alone proved adequately persuasive against the British. Maj. ?? Stopford, commander of the British force inside the fort, surrendered his garrison of 10 officers and 78 enlisted men of the Royal Fusilers. The fort also housed 81 women and children.

The American force confinscated military stuff including 125 stand of British arms, 6 tons of gunpowder, and 6,500 musket cartridges. They also confinscated foodstuffs including 134 barrels of pork, 80 barrels of flour, and s bunch of rice, butter, and peas. The sentimental trophy was the British regimental colors, which was sent to Congress. Conclusion: American Victory

I am retired. I do not have any recent pictures of me out of uniform. Therefore, I am not violating any regulations. Check that if you want, but I am not representing the Army. If I had a picture of me in a Spiderman costume would you be so offended? I think not. So, if I am retired and the picture is a couple of years old, the regulations do not apply to me. That is sufficient an answer as you are going to get regardless of whether you all think you know the regulations or not.

And if you open you eyes you will see on my old uniform that I have the Army Lapel Pin on my lapel. Meaning, I am either a. retired, or have been Honorably discharged. And judging by my former rank, (which I get to keep the title long after I am retired), I am long past my contractual obligations to the Army or the Armed Forces. I'll reply to the "highlights" such as they are--and let me qualify this by stipulating I have no idea if the anonymous commentator is who he represents himself to be. I'll proceed as if he is.

The Spiderman idea would be completely between you and the copyright holder on the image--although a mask might not be a bad idea.

And the regs do apply to retirees--the section on retirees specifically references the section of the regulations I cited in my original post (see 30-7, pg. 316).

As for: "I want all gun owners to be responsible members of a lawful society."

No problem. The wording of their "5 Golden Rules" ensures that private gun ownership can be disqualified, so all gun owners will be lawful in the IANSA/Control Arms global society you're supporting. That's because all gun owners will be the ones dictating the law. But for the life of me, I can't tell the difference between most of them and the "gang members" you don't condone.

Well, that tells me all about you right there, and why you have such affinity for UN-style controls and "human rights," which are dictated, defined and limited by the global body (and thus revocable), and overseen by these enlightened humanitarians.

News flash: This ain't Starship Troopers. I know you consider yourself an "Only One" with special "earned rights," but here they are unalienable, a birthright, endowed by our Creator. No one has authority to tell me I have or haven't earned them. I am entitled.

A uniform alone does not bring honor, considering the likes of Benedict Arnold and Lon Horiuchi once wore one. The military heroes I revere are the ones who bring honor to the uniform, not the other way around. From what I can see, assuming you actually are what you represent yourself to be, you're now bringing disgrace to it.

And what's this race card crap? Is that your way of keeping others from criticizing you for personal deficiencies? That doesn't play here. We defiant gun-owning men and women stand as individuals--the groups we belong to are secondary. Besides, you're the one who appears to be hiding a Hispanic surname from your Control Arms post.

And as for you siccing NSA on me, I learned a long time ago never to make threats I wasn't prepared to back up--it just makes people who do so look like impotent fools, and ones who do so anonymously look even more ridiculous. And you call me a "pathetic little turd"?

It's Always Anti-Gunny in Philadelphia

The same Philadelphia City Council members who have challenged the state's supremacy on gun laws introduced two new gun-control bills yesterday, one aimed at closing what critics say is a big loophole in the secondhand gun market...

The other bill introduced yesterday would raise the city penalty for carrying a gun illegally from $300 to $1,900 and would allow police to confiscate a car driven by someone illegally carrying a gun - regardless of ownership of the car.

Can you imagine what the men who once risked everything, to forge a Republic conceived in Liberty, would have thought of these wretched petty tyrants? Right after you told them Independence Hall would one day be a UN World Heritage site?

A new web site, www.GunVoter.org , is seeking assistance from organizations and individuals who have information about state and local candidates in the upcoming elections. Information can be about a single candidate or a list of candidates and links to sources or additional information are encouraged.

GunVoter.org is designed to be a central clearinghouse and repository of information about candidates and legislative matters to help GunVoters cast their votes wisely. Along with areas for comment on federal matters, there are forum areas for each of the 50 states. A University of Arizona student fatally shot two men who forced their way into his off-campus home early Thursday, Tucson police said.

Too bad he didn't live ON campus. Then he could be dead, which would serve the purposes of those seeking even more control just fine.

Reality vs Perception

Other weapons were found in locked premises. It is understood the arms, including a hand gun and rifles, were linked to the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF)...

In May last year, the UVF effectively declared an end to its campaign of violence by announcing the organisation was adopting a non-military and civilian role. Recruitment, military training and targeting had ceased, intelligence rendered obsolete and all guns "put beyond reach".

The Clever Hans Effect

What's the connection to the 2008 presidential election? Well, much of the media analysis, and even the strategies of the campaigns themselves, is based on the ongoing poll results indicating voter preferences state-by-state and nationwide. But I suspect that we are observing the Clever Hans Effect on a massive scale, and that the polls are in fact unreliable. Worse than "unreliable," actually: they are inaccurate because to some degree they reflect not the honest feelings of the respondents but rather what the pollers want to hear.
