Last week I was reading a column by National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea about the new draconian legislation introduced by some liberal idiot from Illinois (that seems to be the state's greatest export).

I couldn't help but to notice the unusual number of comments left on this particular column and took a look. The bulk of the comments seemed to be in response to another National Examiner Columnist. [More]

Holder's First Hurdle

Disappointing, considering when they last ran for office, Hatch received an A+ grade from NRA and Martinez was given an A. But aside from a letter criticizing Holder for, among other things, not being a strong enough proponent of federal "Project Exile" gun control provisions, the Association has declined to mobilize its membership to oppose Holder's confirmation, and has even gone one further step, according to RedState.com:

The NRA does not want to hurt their scores. Therefore they’ll make noises in opposition to Holder, but they will not score a vote for Holder to impact legislators’ rankings.

An Unconfirmed Rumor About Russian Ammo

As long as we clearly understand this is totally unconfirmed, I still feel compelled to share it on the chance there could be something to it:

I attended the ...Gun Show today... this 600 table show draws exhibitors from throughout the Southeast, including the NRA and the BATFE (separate rooms in the exhibit hall). While I was at the BATFE table (I would simultaneously talk to Jesus and Satan if I could arrange it), an exhibitor approached the two BATFE agents (who actually were very nice and advising two FFL’s how to better handle a particularly obnoxious and notorious overzealous local BATFE agent to effect a positive outcome for the FFL’s) and complained that U.S. Customs in the Port of Miami impounded his shipment of Russian small arms ammunition in anticipation of a ammunition import policy change effective January 20, 2009 (Obama Inauguration Day). The two BATFE agents basically stated that they would be “the last to know”, but as far as they knew there was no policy change, and they advised that the exhibitor’s attorney should contact U.S. Customs to inquire what the particular problem was to effect immediate release of the shipment. Common sense and logical advice, but a few days will tell. I was impressed by the two BATFE agents and how they handled the people approaching them at the show.

I'm keeping the name of my correspondent and identifying information about the particular show out of this because I don't want anyone embarrassed by this (but me, and I don't embarrass) should it turn out to be nothing.

As for being impressed by the personable BATFU reps, I do wonder if they'd leave such a favorable impression were someone acting like "shall not be infringed" means what it says in front of them...

I Don't Know Art, But I Know What I Like

I so love hip, artsy Southern California libs.

I remember years back, the modern art museum held an Andy Warhol exhibit, and had plastered banners of his Mao portrait all over town, even hanging from street lamps, which means they had local government endorsement. The section I was driving through was known for its large Jewish community. Matter of fact, the reason we were there was to go to my favorite deli.

I remember at the time wondering if it would have been so enthusiastically supported/ passively accepted had the banners featured Hitler's portrait. Or are some genocidal monsters more acceptable in enlightened society than others?

My favorite interaction with modern artists--and in the interests of full disclosure I deem most of them ridiculous frauds-- is when we took the kids to the LaBrea Tar Pits museum and decided to have lunch at (the now-closed) Johnnie's a block or so down...

In order to get there, we had to pass the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and they were having some kind of local artists' sidewalk exhibit--my wife pushed the stroller with youngest feral son Qusay peacefully slumbering, and I held hands and walked behind with eldest feral son Uday, probably four at the time...

To make a long story short, the kid has always been precocious, to my continued amazement and joy. Anyway, as we walked past the various exhibitors, he decided on his own to size up their work and give on-the-spot critiques.

The wife, who is more sensitive (and an all-around nicer human being) than I am, was properly mortified. Me, I could barely suppress the laughter seeing the reactions as we passed each canvas, the danged munchkin pointing and pronouncing "Good...good...crap...crap...crap..."

Isn't that what art is supposed to do? Give us new ways of exploring truth...?

"Easy Access"

He has repelled two monsters, this brave youth, most certainly saving his grandmother, and probably himself, as murderers tend not to look upon witnesses with favor. He has stopped a violent crime from happening and assured that at least one sociopathic reptile will never again find human victims.

So where are the headlines: RESPONSIBLE ARMED YOUTH SAVES LIVES...? I mean, the press is supposed to be objective and unbiased, right?

Radio Daze

I am overwhelmed of late. The quantity of demands requiring attention and response are burying me. Not that I'm complaining--it's better than calling out and only hearing echoes, but please understand if an email slips through the cracks--I'm not ignoring you on purpose.

So I'm just now getting a moment to post this, my segment on The Steve Gill Show.

He was pretty knowledgeable during our chat--he was up on the latest Mayors Against (Your) Guns youth outreach, for example...it made it easy to keep the conversation flowing, which I like.

I was only on for 15 minutes, but I think we crammed a lot in our back-and-forth, and he certainly let me have my say. Next time, I'll make sure I email the producer on how to pronounce my last name and will ask them to let me give a website plug for my Gun Rights Examiner column.

Haney v. United States

Georgia Carry has issued a lengthy email update. In short, a man pardoned for his 1960s drug conviction with a full restoration of firearms rights was denied a transfer this year (even though they approved one two years ago). The NICS people then called the Forsyth County Probate Judge and ordered the judge to revoke the man's Georgia firearms license, which is really going out of their way. In addition, when he appealed the NICS decision, they told him he was ineligible to even possess a gun under federal law.

The preliminary injunction was to keep the man from being prosecuted during the pendency of the federal lawsuit.

Suffice it to say that the federal government was going way out of its way to disarm Mr. Haney, but he stood up for his rights, hired two top notch lawyers, and the federal government completely caved in and conceded its case before the hearing even started yesterday.

Rolling Stone magazine reported that at a dinner celebrating Clinton’s election win, Emanuel began reeling off the names of his enemies. As he said each name, he stabbed a steak knife into the table. “Dead! Dead! Dead!” he screamed as he said each enemy’s name.

Today's Gun Rights Examiner presents another aspect of Bobby Rush's insane bill.

Hey, I had a first yesterday. The column ended up as #1 in both "Political" and "National" categories. These things go up and down, so currently I'm at #2 in "Political" and #5 "National. And here's something else to consider--I've said from the start there is a demand for this, and I'm being proven right. As of this moment, John Longenecker's Los Angeles Gun Rights Examiner and Daniel White's Cleveland Gun Rights Examiner are at #3 and #5 respectively in the nationwide "Politics" category, so I'm assuming they're kicking tail in their beat cities. Understand these are new columns--heck, mine is only 3 months old. They've beaten my numbers with some of their articles, and I count on them to do it again.

And this is where I get to act like the smart-alecky kid with the "I know something you don't know" smirk. I hope to have another bit of good related news to give you later today.

How do you think the powers that be now look on gun rights as a topic with untapped potential? And do you think maybe their competitors may catch on, and open up new opportunities for spreading an RKBA message to an even broader audience?

I hope this illustrates how vital it is for supporters of this site to also support the Examiner.com work (and non-supporters can continue to ignore the phenomenon). I'd sure like to see one of those internet rumors pointed out to me. Most of what I've seen have been pretty dead on, albeit they missed the point about Holder not being a strong enough champion for federal gun control edicts.

I guess some will argue this "strategy" is "prudent." Any bets on how "effective" it will be?

We're the Only Ones Called on the Carpet Enough

Sgt. Chris Van Compernolle told SBT24/7 News that a man from Illinois had a handgun concealed in his pocket. The gun accidentally discharged when he was retrieving something from his pocket and fired straight down into the carpet...

No one was injured and there was no property damage, VanCompernolle said.

A Four Winds statement later identified the man as an off-duty policeman from the University of Illinois-Chicago. [More]

They say there were no injuries and they say he sustained minor injuries. They say there was no property damage and they say he shot the carpet. There's no reciprocity for concealed carry and he endangers customers and employees, and he wasn't hauled away in cuffs?

Anybody think a non-"Only One" would be treated with similar deference?

I wasn't overly concerned, and replied:

It's the gun used in the shooting so forensics can run tests and ballistics can corroborate or challenge his statements. If they took all his guns, that would be one thing. In this case, it's pretty routine practice, plus they do it to "Only One" service weapons as well.

She ain't havin' none of that, and shot back:

Dear David,

Right, and if it is his only gun, he's sol until they give it back unless he can afford to buy another one - provided they LET him buy another one. Police often hold such guns for YEARS, since they are "evidence."

I don't buy it. There is no need for ballistics or any other tests on the gun since he acknowledges that he shot the criminal. There is nothing to prove that way. The autopsy would be the only way to tell the trajectory or path of the bullet in the body to verify his account of the shooting. The gun itself has nothing to do with it.

I understand forensics, evidence gathering and the autopsy process very well. Confiscation of his gun is BS. Sorry. :)

We're the Only Ones with Two Sides to the Story Enough

The police officer told Pluhar Jr. he needed to wait his turn, but the Frankfort man purportedly refused.

The elder Pluhar then allegedly approached the off-duty officer, told him to mind his own business and asked whether Kirby wanted to take the dispute outside.

When Kirby asked Pluhar Sr. what his intentions were, the Frankfort man purportedly said he would kick Kirby's posterior and also suggested he might shoot him. [More]

Huh. I hate line cutters. Sounds like a good call to take an arrogant bully down.

But wait:

He said his son had waited in line for 25 minutes once and been sent by a clerk to exchange an item. When he returned, Pluhar Sr. said the clerk waved his son to the front of the line, and Kirby objected.

He said his son tried to explain the situation, but Kirby insulted him, at which point Pluhar Sr. asked Kirby to step outside but Kirby laughed at him. Pluhar Sr. also denied Kirby's claim that the older man threatened to shoot him. He said he and his son tried to walk away from the confrontation, but Kirby followed them outside.

Pluhar Sr. said Kirby never identified himself as a police officer and he only found out he was an officer from other police at the scene.

So who do we believe?

See, that's the problem you run into when there are so many "Only Ones" and so few peace officers...
