In a Perfect World

"Of course, in a perfect world there'd be no guns, but you have to live in the world that exists."
I dunno, Brandon--in addition to their protective benefits, they're kind of fun, and shooting offers a great opportunity for cameraderie, be it with family, friends, or even strangers.

I guess a perfect world is in the eye of the beholder.

But you're on the right track with sensing a need to defend yourself and your family. Listen to those instincts. Follow them and learn.

An Alarming Development

Truro police officers responding to a burglar alarm at Manso's unoccupied house in December seized three firearms, including an assault rifle. The weapons lacked trigger locks and Manso did not have a valid firearms license, police said...

"I am charged with a technical violation of gun possession with an out-of-date permit by the very D.A. who is the focus of my book," Manso said in the statement.

Me, I'd be wondering who set off that alarm.

Look Back in Anger

Gun rights advocate David Codrea is an angry guy. For one thing, he is angry about what has happened to Second Amendment rights in America: Just seeing the title of his blog, The War on Guns, is enough to tell one that.

Lately, though, Codrea has been especially angry at Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr.

Not angry--just insistent on a straight answer. The Barr campaign and the LP addressing this early on and giving their side would have perhaps made all this unnecessary--that they still have not, and that George Dance thinks that's the politically smart thing to do--shows a fundamental disconnect with gun owners who are tired of the same old evasion they can get from either of the major parties.

Go read it yourself, and don't forget Part Two, where it's suggested I'm being "misrepresentative." I'll probably have something to say about that in a few days.

Who's in that area and can attend?

I see a few potential scenarios: One or two of you can go, and if you sneak in a recording device, we can get some hot Mary McFate-type insider intel on their plotting. Alternatively, a bunch of you from local gun clubs can go down and dominate the meeting just by a being a visible pro-gun presence, and especially during any Q&A by challenging the lies.

I was thinking of just approaching a few of you privately, but this is more fun, putting this out there where the gungrabbers can see it. Now they're going to freak at the possibility that every non-member paying a fee that night might have an agenda of his own. Heck, our "moles" might even have CCWs and be secretly carrying their guns! And by announcing this publicly, it will have the added benefit of heightening hoplophobic angst even if no one from our side shows up at all--because, as we keep trying to tell them--when things are concealed, no one knows for sure.

I actually prefer the first option--at $18 a pop, you don't want to enrich their coffers too much, plus a covert presence adds to the overall level of uncertainty. My recommendation for gun owners in the area--have fun with this.

Sanctuary

An immigrant suspected of being in the United States illegally - freed after being shielded from possible deportation by San Francisco officials despite committing two gang-related assaults as a juvenile - faces charges that he tried to stab a man to death last year in San Mateo County, authorities say.

From the city that says you must be disarmed.

The real criminals are running the sanctuary.

This Day in History: August 24

On August 24, around midnight, Capt. John Lamb, under orders from the New York Provincial Congress, began dismantling the cannons in Battery Park. They were removing the cannons to place them at a safe site. Capt. George Vandeput, of the HMS Asia, sent a bargeload of his British troops to investigate. They fired a shot to warn Vandeput that something was going on with the Americans. Lamb's men fired on the American barge, killing 1 man. The HMS Asia opened fire on Battery Park and alarms sounded on shore. Expecting their city to be attacked and pillaged, many residents fled, the beginning of a general exodus to New Jersey and Long Island. Conclusion: British Victory

The Quiet Man

I'll take substance over style any day. And even though I knew what was coming practically from the start, I still enjoyed the hell out of the ending.

As long as you're over at Whose Paranoid's, he's added the old Sierra Times "Whack 'em & Stack 'em" archives to his "Resource" links (along with The "Only Ones" Files).

We're the Only Ones Not Faking it Enough

"If you are asking if I had an orgasm, yes. It was a job, sir," Breiner said. "I didn't have pleasure doing this. I was paid to do it."
Isn't there a term for that?

But don't worry: Sweetie is going to stand by her man.

Miss Wynette?
Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
Giving all your love to just one man
You'll have bad times
And he'll have good times
Doin things that you don't understand
But if you love him
You'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him
Oh, be proud of him
Cause after all he's just a man
Not just a man, Tammy, an "Only One"!

CHANGE!

Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.
Don't you just love the way the "Authorized Journalists" spin things right from the get-go?

A six-term Beltway insider? What the hell happened to "Change"?

We know nothing will change in relation to democrat attacks on gun ownership.

And if you really want to experience a few moments of hopelessness, go watch the video clip posted here to see how our next president will be selected.

I wonder if Biden will plagiarize his acceptance speech?

To Catch a Spy

What with all this Mary McFate brouhaha, now seems a pefect time to resurrect this story--about how anti-gun "researcher" Garen Wintemute has been infiltrating gun shows to spy on private transactions.

Which gun shows? It's tough to predict. In his initial Joyce Foundation-funded "study," he went to "28 gun shows — eight each in California and Nevada, six in Arizona, four in Texas and two in Florida..."

What's he currently up to--if anything?

Wintemute now plans to conduct “parallel studies” in other regions of the country that compare gun shows in more regulated states to gun shows in less regulated states. Eventually, he hopes to train others to become observers at gun shows — and possibly to go one step further than he did and notify local police when they witness an illegal transaction.
So there's really no telling--but we can--with very little effort, not only make his subversive mission more difficult, but make a game out of it and have some fun in the process.

May I suggest, along the lines of "Where's Waldo?":

Where's Wintemute?

WarOnGuns correspondent Michael S has kindly converted my flyer into a .pdf file suitable for making copies. If you go to a gun show, take a few with you--give one to the event promoters to alert them of a potential spy in their midst with a recording device. Ask them to post copies and notify their dealers.

And feel free to send gun show proprietors and dealers you know a link to this post.

Maybe we can find him and get his ass thrown out--and expose the feigned outrage from those who would see us disarmed for the hypocrisy it is.

Weakonomics

Are there more guns in the U.S. or more opinions about guns?

...today we present a quorum with a very narrow focus: what are some good ideas to cut gun deaths?
Here's my reply.

Why not leave a comment of your own?

We're the Only Ones Fulfilling the Prophecy Enough

A 12-year Superior police officer has been charged with second-degree assault for allegedly pulling a gun and pointing it at a motorist in the parking lot of a Two Harbors service station in an apparent road rage incident on Sunday.
In fairness, the Brady's did predict we'd have "gun violence" over minor traffic incidents. They just didn't tell us how many of them would be initiated by enraged "Only Ones."

All Edom Will Bow Down!

Witness that most contemptible of spectacles, a human being utterly without self-respect, what was supposed to be a man, an heir of liberty, a beneficiary of the blood of Patriots, grovelling in degradation and humiliation at the feet of a false leader.

That he does so voluntarily makes him all the more contemptible.

What can we learn from this? What parallels can we draw?

The Heller High Watermark

I’ve said before magazines are poor places for developing stories — the time between events and publication may be months, and assumptions may be proven wrong in the interim.
This was my take on Heller, written just after the decision, and now my Rights Watch column for the October issue of GUNS Magazine, at newsstands now.

More from the "They Hate Us Because We're Free" Department

A Justice Department plan would loosen restrictions on the Federal Bureau of Investigation to allow agents to open a national security or criminal investigation against someone without any clear basis for suspicion...

Hey, I haven't done anything wrong. They can look at me any time.

Who could possibly be against this except someone with something to hide?

Hmmmm...?

Spies Like Us

The evidence suggests McFate/Sapone was subcontracting for a firm hired by the NRA, which relies on the public's benign belief that it is a citizens' lobby, to spy on and lie to those working in the gun violence prevention movement.
"The evidence suggests"?

You mean after all this sound and fury, you don't have proof of spying as strong as, say this?

But if she does have inside dope, Bryan, maybe you can use your CeaseFire connections to help us get to the bottom of this...?

I mean, you do say you're interested in the truth...

We're the Only Ones Capable of Keeping Weapons in Our Homes Enough

"If someone has a weapon in their home and ... it isn't secured, hopefully they'll recognize this as a chance to get rid of it and prevent a tragic accident or have it taken during a burglary," he said.
Yo, Chief Hayes: I am so sick of this crap self-serving police officials like you spread around to disarm us while you keep yours.

Why are you automatically more capable than We the People at preventing unauthorized access to firearms? Why is your solution for us--and only us--to turn ours in?

Because you're some kind of super "Only One," with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men?

Looks Like Their Priorities Aren't Straight, Either

A decision by House Democrats to allow a vote next month on a proposal to gut the city’s handgun law has stunned local home rule advocates and could foretell a congressional overturn of a future same-sex marriage bill, according to city hall insiders.
I'm sorry...I really don't mean to focus on "city hall insiders" in a mean sort of way...

Look, ladies, gentlemen and in-betweens: It's not people like me who are trying to render you defenseless--it's your presumed "leadership" who would rather see you bashed, or worse, than armed.

Guest Editorial: The Three Most Important Attributes of a Decent Human

By Charles H. Sawders ("Straightarrow")

In this day and age when every psycho-babbling television psychologist, social worker, government agent, teacher of children and clergy are quick to list any number of attributes necessary to be a "good productive member of society", such as appreciation of diversity, multi-culturalism, and the relativism of all social and ideological structures and practices being equal, despite the consequences of any such structure, they never mention the three most important.

They are in descending order of importance Courage, Honor, Love. That's right, love is in there at a lowly third place. There are reasons for this particular ranking.

Courage is by far the most important asset a man can have if he is to be a good man. Both physical and moral courage. Moral courage being the more important of the two. It is moral courage that enables one to make decisions about right and wrong. Moral courage also enables the person who has it to stand against popular opinion when he believes it wrong or evil. He thus is able to speak out against it and to work to change the wrong or evil, even at the minor expense of popularity, or vilification or ostracism. The possessor of moral courage may even find himself the focus of intimidation by government. In many cases he must face physical attack if his opponents on the issue are extreme, knowing that if his stance is unpopular enough he will have no supporters in law enforcement. That is why he must also have physical courage.

Physical courage does not let him proceed without fear. It lets him proceed despite it. Most men would fear physical attack and/or incarceration. But the man with both physical and moral courage will not be deterred, even though he may not be desirous of the likely consequences.

Without courage, one can have no honor. Honor is made up of many different things. Keeping one's word, regardless of the circumstances is honorable. Protecting the weak, the family, the nation, and the principles of free men is honorable. Honor requires that one does not trespass another. It also requires that one does not submit to trespass by another. Without courage these are impossible ideals to keep. Honor makes it possible to love truly.

Without honor love cannot be born, let alone survive. Love requires that the party who loves has the honor to keep his commitments. Known honor of a person is the only measure of his trustworthiness. Honor demands that one not deviate from his stated principles, even when those principles are costly or result in unpleasantness. There are many ways to fake honor, and many people do. However, they invariably give themselves away when a test is applied and the cost of honoring one's commitment is heavy. The dishonorable will discover a reason that "this is different". The honorable will realize that the principle he claims to hold is still valid and it is not different just because it is to his detriment to uphold it.

Love is third on the list. Not just romantic love, but love of all kinds. Love for your fellow man or woman. That is a very hard task oftentimes. Some can love their fellow man as individuals while not being overly proud of the species. Others can love their fellow man as a species, but have no real affection for them as individuals. Either way works to the benefit of himself and his fellow man and society at large if he has courage and honor.

Romantic love is by far the most fragile. Therefore it is also the most dependent on the honor of the parties involved.

Love of country is to some an abstract idea that is not close to their souls. To others love of country is an almost physical thing in the reality of their lives. Courage and honor, though, make it possible for both to satisfy their obligations as good men.

There are those who love only themselves. They are lost. They are lost to society, to those they claim to care about and even to themselves. They just don't know it. A great many of these types become what we usually regard as highly successful by traditional measures. While they may have courage, they have no honor, for these are the types who routinely trespass others. Whether they be boardroom presidents or back alley muggers. There are few of them relatively speaking, but the damage they do far outweighs the weight of their numbers.

In summary love is not possible without honor, honor is not possible without courage. Decency is not possible without all three.

What decent man could contemplate their absence in his character?

I then stepped out of my car while placing myself in a ready position (weaver stance, car between the two of us, hand on side arm ready to draw.) He also got out of his vehicle and started moving towards me while gesturing with his gun.
This is a fascinating thread, complete with corroborating links to police and news reports.

More than anything, it shows the peaceable nature of a gun owner, and how being armed actually kept violence from happening. That the press noticed creates a wonderful opportunity for gun owners to write letters to the editor and emphasize that point.

The "Only One" Who Did the Right Thing and Understands Why

"She had no legal right to keep the dog, and that's the reason we stepped in," Hunter said. "What she was doing, keeping the dog because she said it was aggressive, would be like me taking somebody's television set because I didn't like the programs they watched."
Exactly.

Good job, Officer Hunter. You were the "Only One" who did the right thing here.

We're the Only Ones Giving You an Option Enough

An incident that led to an Indianapolis police officer being charged with rape Thursday began, prosecutors say, with a proposition.

"I'm going to give you an option," officer Anthony S. Smith reportedly told a woman with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. "I can lock you up, but I really don't want to . . . or you can ride with me for an hour."
So now we're up to 11 in four months?

Think about that: We're constantly reminded by "Only Ones" apologists that we're only dealing with "a few bad apples." I don't know 11 co-workers in my entire career, which spans decades and private sector companies of all sizes, who have been charged or arrested for this kind of crap. I can't recall even one.

Via Shermlock Shomes, who writes:
I'm tempted to start posting this stuff to my blog and go into competition with you for daily posts of "Only Ones." Thanks to the fine officers of the IMPD, I think I'd beat you hands-down!
Don't compete--enhance! I WANT people to take and spread the "Only Ones" concept far and wide, and have said so from the start--after all, I don't own the concept: we owe that to Lee Paige, the Patron Saint of the Only Ones. Make it part of the wider debate--that'll never happen if it's confined to this one small blog.

We're the Only Ones Litigious Enough

"We need citizens to call us when they have a law enforcement need," Neves told the Sacramento CBS affiliate. "The last thing I can afford is to have a public policy that you can't call the Sheriff's office because you may be sued by one of the responders who is there to protect [you]."
I actually have mixed feelings about this--if I am doing something evil and injure or kill you, you or your survivors should be able to hold me accountable in all ways, including financially. I would think a police officer should have the same claim.

The reason I do the "Only Ones" series is to illustrate police and government employees having special privileges and immunities, not available to We the People, based solely on their employment status. But I don't think a cop should have fewer rights, either.

This might even have the unintended consequences of incentivizing the public not to rely on police, that is, increasing self reliance and reducing dependency on government (but then again, they'd probably then end up being prosecuted for vigilantism).

I dunno--like I said, my feelings are mixed. We've seen ridiculous abuses in the past, like this infuriating story. And I can see a need for a "fireman's rule" of sorts, and yes, risks are part of the job.

I'd be interested in hearing how others think this should be approached, and why.

A Call to Disarm

As Neilson wrote, "Citizens who desire peace can indulge in no greater folly than that which is summed up in the phrase, 'the best way to preserve peace is to prepare for war.' … Governments have made the war; only the peoples can make an unarmed peace."
It's not the weapons.

Good grief.

I used to think Lew Rockwell was smarter than this.

CUM ULLA SELLA IN PUGNO TABERNA*

We've talked about this obnoxious, abrasive, unfunny and contemptible POS punk before:
Dear Revs. Jackson and Sharpton:

I am outraged by Comedy Central allowing Lewis Black to exploit the images of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X in their "Root of All Evil" program. To use their heads as shooting gallery targets, along with John and Bobby Kennedy, goes beyond poor taste. This is simply more of corporate America exploiting the very real pain and tragedy by laughing at martyrs who gave their lives in the struggle for racial justice and equality. There is no place among decent human beings for making a profit by making jokes out of the tragic and violent way these men died.

See the clip I'm referring to here:
http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/root_of_all_evil/index.jhtml
It is titled "Preview: NRA Vs. PETA - The Case."

It's their right to make fun of the NRA, but if they're going to do it in such a way as this, it is our right to protest. I call on you to use your leadership to make those responsible realize the deep offensiveness of their actions. I'm sure you both realize the real pain surviving family members and devoted followers must feel to see the deaths of these historic men reduced to props for a cheap laugh.

Sincerely,
David Codrea

True North

I received the following email from a northern ally that he hopes could have implications for the Olofson case.

"I sincerely regret being too late to help with the Olofson decision," he wrote me. "Here's a related case precedent from Canada."

I leave it to the principals involved to determine if there is something here they can use.

Mr. Codrea:

My heart goes out to Mr. Olofson. There but for the grace of G_d go many. Mens Rea anyone?

http://nfa.ca/files/RvMacDonaldFullTranscript.pdf (5.6MB) http://nfa.ca/files/RvMacDonaldDecision.pdf (600KB)

"The Crown's theory was that the AR-10 is 'capable of firing projectiles in rapid succession during one pressure of the trigger.' The Crown attempted to show that by playing a video of an officer removing the safety lever from the gun, loading two cartridges into the magazine, and then firing a burst of two shots. The video went on to show the officer loading three cartridges into the magazine, and firing a burst of three shots. Conclusive proof, right?"

"WRONG. The firearm was merely malfunctioning. Removing the safety lever allowed the trigger mechanism parts to move into a WRONG position, and prevented the sear from holding the hammer back -- as it is designed to do. So: Fire, extract, eject, feed --and, as the bolt reaches the forward-and-locked position, the hammer -- which has been FOLLOWING the bolt instead of staying cocked as it is designed to do -- gives a slight blow to the firing pin. It is a VERY weak blow -- NOT enough to fire most cartridges."

"When the AR-10 -- or any other semi-auto rifle -- is demonstrating 'hammerfollow' --it is NEVER cocked. Proper hammer impact is IMPOSSIBLE."

For what it's worth, I don't know if American courts allow Canadian court decisions to be used. We can use decisions from the U.S., U.K. and Australia and possibly other Commonwealth countries. I've just started going through our files, digitizing hard copy decisions we've had on file and I had a specific request for this one. Afterward I popped onto your waronguns blog, I remembered Mr. Olofson and my heart sank.

Let me know if there is some way of making an advanced purchase of "Absolved" by Mr. Vanderboegh. It would find a nice home right beside my copy of "Unintended Consequences."

The individuals who were "invited" to bring their guns in but didn't now will be included in the ongoing investigation, as well as people who were identified by former owners as having purchased that type of weapon recently, authorities said.
What gets me is the 2/3 who automatically complied. At least we know the approximate percentage of French gun owners who will immediately surrender.

It appears the OSBI has adopted French law enforcement standards. Remember that rape/murder a while back, where they took DNA samples from male villagers?

David Olofson Update

From Dave and Pat Olofson:

Hello everyone.

Please feel free to pass this message to those who will care.

I would like to pass on an update on David, as I see it has been more than four weeks since the last.

He tells us he is doing fine, and we have been getting about one call a week, so it is good to hear from him. He is trying to help others when he is in the law library. I remind him not to let his guard down or become complacent, as I’m sure they will be looking for an opportunity to go after him for anything else they can. He says he is losing weight with all the free time, exercise and the great food they have.

All packages are now being received that we now know the proper methods of sending: Letters can be no more than 10 pages. I have started to print on both sides, that way we get twice the bang per stamp: 5 pages cost the standard .42/1oz.envelope. 10 pages cost .59/2oz.envelope, both being first class postage. I try and send him an average of 5 per week, and he looks forward to it every day. I challenge all of you to send him something once a week. Believe me it will not be too much.

Magazines and soft cover books are best/recommended shipping from a commercial book store. This method is preferred and quicker to get to him. You may have to look for a store to work with you as some will not ship if not purchased from them. And yes to buy new mags from a store so they can ship them would be expensive, but we might do a book that is on special. USPS has worked but it must be marked on the outside what it is: i.e. ‘soft covered magazines’ or soft covered books’, or it will be returned to you. I have sent books at book rate and it is very reasonable, as long as you box and wrap at home. If you purchase your box, bubble wrap & tape at the post office it will cost 3-4x more, I’ve tested it both ways and you do not want to do it at the post office if you don’t have to. Be reasonable on what you send him and please use common sense, as it will be reviewed and censored ‘appropriately’. I know he would like every gun and shooting mag out there, but they will only end up in the wrong hands. I know it shouldn’t make a difference, but it does. And nothing sexist or racist will not go thru to him and will again only end up in the wrong hands. Fishing he loves, computers he loves (which I am sure is driving him crazy), any sportsman/outdoors magazine and any good car mag would do the trick.

He has told me that the GOA fund has made its first payments from their Olofson fund toward his mortgage and auto. He sincerely thanks you all for your support and GOA’s efforts to help him and his family. Thank you, thank you and thank you. He worries daily about his family, but indicated that it was a tremendous relief for his wife when the payments went thru. Thank you, all of you and we hope your efforts and prayers continue, because YOU DO make a difference. If not YOU, then who?

The briefs will be submitted to the court of appeals next week. But as you may already know the govt has 30 days to respond, and then the defense gets another, I believe, 14 days to respond to them. David has had a chance to read over transcripts and information that his past attorneys would not give to him, gee I wonder why?? He now knows why! He says we will be surprised, and most probably outraged when these are made known. But what will this court do with it? I truly hope more than the last court. I’m sorry that I do not have more that I can tell you, but he is doing as his new defense is telling him, and as they have said, they do not want to tell the govt any more or sooner than they have to. If I were you I would check regularly on GOA, as I’m sure Larry Pratt will comment on it and/or post it after they are submitted, and rightly so.

Have you written your congressman, USAG, FBI or the President lately?? I just had a short visit with mine. See if yours is having their town meetings and make sure he knows where you stand, in addition be sure and ask him where he and congress stand!! I’ll send you a note in a couple of days on my encounter. He did not have to do any research on the issue, as I gave him copies of what he would need.

It is driving me crazy not being able to do anything, but I am going to work on that solution as well. I hope you will all join me in David’s continued support in righting this injustice. You have no idea out outraged we get and how much sleep we have lost, when even your own family members believe, and or thru their silence are saying ‘if the govt says he did something then he must have’, ….and we get, you know that uncontrollable urge you have to slap them along side the head to try and wake them up!!

Possibly you have already seen this. I have not. So I thought I would pass it along any way. (Ironic the timing of certain things isn’t it?) I just received this from my long distance cousin Punk, distant in miles but close to the heart:

[Click on this link for "I Don't Carry a Gun" by Syd at Front Sight Press]

After reading this I feel very sad that I could not carry a gun in the open for all of those reasons. This only adds to how I see how sorry our state of affairs are.

Once again thank you all for your support and we hope you will all continue to keep this in the spot light. As I read all the different blogs it surprises me even today how many people still do not get the significance of what this case has done to their 2nd amendment rights!

Regards,

The Terror Loophole

From Illspirit:
I found an article on CNN about an armed airline pilot and a third-grader on the no-fly list, and threw it into a reverse only-ones/think-of-the-children vortex about the 'guns in the hands of terrorists' bit in the new DNC platform. http://www.illspirit.com/blog/63/the-terror-loophole

This got me thinking: What if a few gun bloggers started covering more of these no-fly list stories as a sort of catalog of "people Democrats think are terrorists" or some such? There's probably a bunch of people out there who have no idea about just what is meant by closing the "loophole," and assume it actually means real, convicted terrorists or something. But with the strong google-fu our side has, maybe we can move up in the search ranks so that more people might find just how easy it would be for them to face a lifetime ban?

Likewise, there's probably even some on our side who sort of realize this, but somehow think it couldn't happen to them. If the story about a five year old being on the list doesn't motivate them, I'm not sure what will...
I think in general it's a fine idea. I've used the government's "Homegrown Terrorists" label in the past, but perhaps something more descriptive of the no fly/no guns nexus would be appropriate to create.

Suggestions?

My only point of contention is limiting this to democrats. TSA maintains the list, and they are controlled by a republican administration that has done more to pave the way for intrusive domestic interference and control in the name of "homeland security" than anyone.

I've had my differences with Angelina Jolie's public statements before, but Roseanne Barr is quite simply a frothing leftist loon. Don't believe me? Spend one minute on her blog (Cynthia McKinney???). Sorry--I don't know a way to take your brain out and scrub it off after you do.

And while I don't generally appreciate Howard Stern's style of entertainment, I do think his observation on Roseanne-ex Tom Arnold is funny and right on.

It seems Roseanne accused Tom of all kinds of physical abuse during their tragic, doomed epic love...

Was it true?

Who knows what reality actually creeps into that squirming mind?

But it might explain that emcee gig...

And yeah, Tom--that was your only talent. Do you have a clue the contempt that arises when a nothing slug like you tells men like me you want the government to control our guns?

WomenOnGuard.com stands for less crime in this country, not more crime."
Whatever.

Sounds like rapists will be spreading more than words thanks in part to the culture of ignorance you violence profiteers are hawking.

Funny--I didn't see either of you list self defense expertise credentials, yet you present yourselves as qualified to dispense advice that could result in serious injury or death if women follow it and it doesn't work. According to your blog profile, one of you is a graphic designer refugee from Cuban communism (hey, how'd that pepper spray work on Fidel?) and the other is an ex-banker.

So: What makes you "authorities"?

Following a Trail

We've talked about the Blue Trail Range before, or at least about tinkling there.

TJH sends an update:

Part of Blue Trail has been reopened, much to the disappointment of the editors of the Hartford Courant.

Information has been sparse, and I didn't want to comment without knowing more. My club includes a member who is a Connecticut State Trooper. When asked about the status of the case--during our monthly club meeting--he said that both sides have their lawyers, and everyone is tight-lipped at this point.

However, since the editorial staff at The Courant has brought up the subject, and made accusations of their own, I figured I can speak up. I have to say that I suspected that this would be the outcome. I've visited this range, and I am familiar with its layout. The following will be helpful:

Visit: http://mapper.acme.com/

Click on the 'hybrid' mode link.

Paste these coordinates into the search box, then hit 'Find':
N 41.45638 W 72.74771

This should mark the firing line of the 200-yard range. You should be able to see the reservoir to the right. This is the range that will be closed to rifles "for the foreseeable future".

The 100-yard range is here:
N 41.45464 W 72.74822

The reason why I am pointing this out is the difference between the two ranges, made obvious by the feature shown at N 41.45450 W 72.74711 : the berm. The 200-yard range doesn't have a berm like this. All the ranges are constructed so one is shooting down into a depression, and the 100-yard berm is an imposing feature that I would guess is at least 15 feet high, if not more.

I include this quote from the editorial:

"Ms. McCarthy's confidence is misplaced. Bullets have been hitting trees in the state park and homes in Durham for years. Yet only recently has Mr. Lyman has seen fit to invest in safety improvements."
The author is attempting to paint David Lyman as some careless yahoo who has done nothing to address concerns over the years. I strongly suspect that the author has no personal experience with Blue Trail range. The 100-yard range has 50-yard target holders. Patrons have been barred from using them. Considering the investment in building the 50-yard apparatus, I can think of no other reason than additional safety to do so. All the 100-yard stations also have a sheet of plywood that makes it pretty clear that the muzzle must go no higher than a certain point. Shooters must only shoot from the bench. It is impossible to clear the berm without being so careless as to raise the muzzle into the wood and cause damage to the building.

I am even skeptical that anyone on the 200-yard range could clear the 450 foot peak in the state park (click on 'Topo' mode) from the angle of incidence on a ground ricochet. I don't have a reference table, but I imagine the one-mile distance to the mountain top would result in a considerable amount of bullet drop--especially after losing energy tearing up dirt.

Still, the range buildings bear the scars of careless idiots. These are most prominent on the pistol range. The presence of rust in the holes suggests that these have been
around a while. The editors at The Courant don't seem to understand the value of doing something (anything!) to reduce liability, even if there is nothing technically wrong with the range in its current state. My last visit was in the Fall of 2006. I did not notice anything amiss. The same rules are posted, and, as always, there were at least two range officers present.

The Courant accuses David Lyman of conducting himself "in bad faith", and suggests that the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection shut down the range and re-write its rules. I wonder if the editors would like to take a crack at this, since they are convinced of wrong-doing, and obviously know the right way to run a shooting range.

We're the Only Ones Undocumented Enough

The Albany Police Department either destroyed records or failed to document its internal investigation of the illegal purchase of machine guns by dozens of Albany police officers and at least one civilian...

[Th]e documents show there were apparently 52 machine guns purchased, and that at least nine are missing...

The scandal was kept quiet by the police force after it was discovered in late 2002 by agents with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives. The ATF found one of the machine guns -- still registered to the police force -- illegally listed for sale in a Colonie gun store, B & J Guns.
Since 2002? Gee, it didn't take BATFU anywhere near that long to put away Wayne Fincher or David Olofson.

Why do you suppose that is?

Here's What I Don't Get

The guy gets caught red-handed and then flat-out lies about it being a prop, but he's allowed to board his plane and, according to this anyway, can get his gun back if he attends a hearing.

All I want to make sure is that these same privileges and immunities will be recognized for me, too. And you.

Of course, I also don't get people of exceptional stature and privilege owning guns and not helping out in the defense of the right for the rest of us.

Blackwater Endorses Gun Control Bill

Blackwater Worldwide announced its support of AB2498, proposed legislation that would prevent prohibited persons from unlawful access to and possession of firearms.

This legislation would serve to hold all responsible firearms training facilities to a common standard, allow training of responsible citizens, and, hopefully, reduce firearms capabilities of dangerous criminals.

It won't make one bit of difference to "dangerous criminals." It will, however, present another burden to the "law-abiding."

And of course you needn't ask: "Only Ones" are exempted.

What you might ask is why gun mercenaries are getting in bed with Lori Saldaña, rated "F" by both GOC and NRA. That is, if we're not too gushing and starry-eyed over "blogger outreach"...

Another BATFU Raid

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Flint Field Office, executed federal search warrants Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Highland Gun Barn, located at 2525 M-59, Highland, Mich., and the Otisville Gun Barn, at 12163 M-15, in Otisville, and arrested Gabriel Kish III and Deborah J. Summers for dealing firearms without a license. The Otisville Gun Barn is licensed by ATF. However, the Highland store is not licensed due to their license being revoked by ATF in 2004 for violating the Gun Control Act.

Anybody have any info on this?

In Hindsight...

...my foresight back in April, 2005 wasn't totally off:
SCOTUS, of course, has been ducking this issue for a long time. They'll probably take the path of least resistance again, and refuse to hear such cases. However, if they accept either Seegars or Parker, I believe the court will not dare say there is no individual rkba. But if they find there is one, it will be so heavily burdened with "reasonable restrictions" as to ensure the status quo. They'll never admit the truth unless someone, that would be us, has enough power to compel them.
And that last prediction still stands.

California Says "Thumbs Up" to Pilot Program

A Sacramento man pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of ammunition by a felon after buying bullets from a local sporting goods store...

Clark's illegal activity came to light as a result of a pilot program requiring merchants to collect identifying information from people buying ammunition.
There is no evidence he ever harmed another, yet he has no recognized right to defend himself for life. Now the captivity special interests will get another several years' worth of subsidies.

So who's interest is this in? And who would buy their ammo from a place that requires registration and a thumbprint when anonymity is just a few hours' drive away?

This reminds me of a little impolite activism I engaged in several years back. I'm sure some would say it wasn't very effective, but you'd be surprised what a good morale boost can be worth.

An Expert Opinion

Trump said he would have advised against allowing teachers to arm themselves, if only because of liability concerns. In the long run, it could have been cheaper and safer to hire security or off-duty police, he said.
Yeah--just like at Columbine and Virginia Tech!

If what he says is true, the same could be said for society in general--it will be cheaper and safer if we disarm everyone and leave their protection to paid "Only Ones." You'd just lose your gun in a cafeteria fight anyway.

It must be true, because Ken Trump is a "school safety expert." Just ask him.

Funny--in his long "love me" list of triumphs and accomplishments, I don't see any schools where he is credited with either deterring an attack from happening or stopping one in progress. That's some "credibility," some "cutting edge" expertise.
