We're the Only Ones With Reduced Charges Enough

A former Seaside Police officer pleaded guilty Thursday to receiving a stolen gun that his stepson later took to school.

Larry Raussa, 62, entered the felony plea with the understanding that the charge would be reduced to a misdemeanor when he is sentenced on Sept. 27 and that he will serve community service rather than a jail term.

Yeah, I'm sure one of us non-"Only Ones" would probably catch the same break if we did the same thing.

Let's see, we now know the names Dayton Jackson and Michael Bell, and we know that charges include "weapons offenses."

If U.S. citizens must travel to these areas, they should exercise special caution and remain vigilant with regard to their personal security. Since January 2004, a series of incidents in the far southern provinces has included arson attacks directed at schools and other buildings associated with the government; the placement of bombs in public areas, including the Hat Yai International airport, and near local government offices; killings of police and other officials; and the theft of weapons and explosives. On April 3 and 4, 2005, a series of bombs were detonated in Hat Yai and nearby Songkhla city in Songkhla Province and in Yala Province. Two American citizens were injured in these attacks. Travelers should be aware that Thai authorities have on occasion instituted special security measures in affected areas, such as curfews, military patrols, or random searches of train passengers.

Canadian Collectors Don't Want THEIR Ox Gored

Survival Tip: Carry a Gun

The answer is that my love of fly-fishing and exploring solo hasn't changed, but the way I protect myself has. I just took shooting lessons and recently purchased a .38 caliber Ruger revolver that I plan to carry with me.

Some might quibble over caliber, but the important thing here is she gets it.

Lesson here for all to see? A moral person with a gun can not only defend themselves, but also those around them.

What kind of risk does Higgins recommend people take? Waiting around for them to respond doesn't have risks?

And note the armed citizen resolved this without firing a shot--that is, rather than a gun in private hands being used to kill, here's a real world example of a citizen using a handgun to restore the peace and save lives--both of the victim and the attacker.

"Cop Killer"

Three men have been charged with illegally possessing two handguns, one of which is called a cop killer because it can break through most bulletproof vests and plates worn by police officers...

Oh, OK, that's why they call it that.

It's not like it's actually gone out and killed cops or anything.

I didn't realize I owned cop killer rifles, because they'll all do that, too. Go through vests and plates, that is.

Sterile Queen Bee Follow-Up

Again, for the record, I own lots of guns; I've hunted all my life (which is a long time); and I believe the Second Amendment is one of our basic freedoms we enjoy here in America, but I don't fret about the federal government breaking down my door to confiscate my battle worn 870 or my late grandfather's octagon-barrel 30-30, nor do I think all gun control laws, such as the ban on automatic assault rifles, are bad. Given that, here are a few thoughts on the NRA.

We've talked about this creature and his idiotic opinions before.

He either doesn't want to get it, or else he knows perfectly well what he's doing. I opt for the latter.

The point, Bill, is not to defend NRA. The point is, AHSA is an organization headed up by known gungrabbers. And for you to cite "automatic assault weapons" and "Gun Guys" to make your points puts you solidly in that camp as well.

Jay.Mac informs me of Rapid Share, a hosting service website, and following the title link should get you to the Word file card template I created, albeit for non-paying users, they make you go through a few advertising steps before letting you see the file.

Steps after clicking on title link:
1. Scroll down to bottom of page and click "Free" button.
2. Wait for "download ticket" countdown, which on completion, will present a "Captcha" form.
3. Enter the characters in the little box and click on "Download from Mirror Alpha." (The characters are sometimes tough to distinguish, so if you get it wrong, back out and try again.)
4. A dialog box should pop up. Choose "Open With" (Microsoft Word or whatever you choose) or "Save to Disk."

A Sign of the Times

Although Kansas has a new concealed-carry gun law, employers have the right to prohibit employees and customers from bringing guns on their premises, Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline said Wednesday...

Businesses open to the public should post signs saying that carrying a concealed weapon on the premises is prohibited.

"If you're a retail place, you need to have a sign in a public place," Kline said.

Without meaning to reopen an old debate, gun owners should react to businesses that do this with their wallets. Profit margins are generally pretty slim, and if you let a business owner know you have chosen his competitor and are going to make a personal commitment to warn other gun owners, you'll probably see some behavior modification.

Ohioans for Concealed Carry have a state-specific business card they use for this purpose. I've taken the liberty of developing a universal card based on this principle and have templated a Word file for Avery 5371 card stock labels. It actually looks a lot crisper than the jpeg here:

A Clarke County sheriff's deputy's gun was stolen late Saturday or early Sunday while he was attending a birthday party for another deputy on Smokey Place, Athens-Clarke police said.

The deputy was off duty when he went to his co-worker's house off Smokey Road in northern Clarke County for her party Saturday night, and during the celebration he loaned his truck to the other deputy's teenage son so he could go to the store...On the way to the store, the teen picked up an 18-year-old neighbor...

So the cop sets the whole scenario up and now they want to prosecute the neighbor kid?

I hope he pleads he just found a gun left unsecured and didn't steal it at all--but just gave it to a responsible adult--his mother-- to return to the police. Note no charges have been filed against the officer--as they would be against any one of us--for leaving an unsecured gun out for the taking while he goes off and parties.

A pair of young brothers from Boyle Heights remained hospitalized Sunday with gunshot wounds...

Police on Sunday identified the alleged shooter as Mauricio Alejandro Jimenez, a native of Mexico and longtime member of the Boyle Heights-based Tiny Boys gang.

Jimenez, 26, has been arrested at least seven times in the past several years for a variety of weapons and gang-related charges — and was deported to Mexico just four months ago after serving more than a year in state prison.

Right. A gun will just endanger you and everyone else, but there's nothing quite as persuasive as poking an enraged, crack-fueled psycho possessing twice your upper body strength with a teasing brush to reestablish control of a situation. And don't worry if you can't find "anything rigid"--we're sure your attacker will be happy to come up with something for you.

Remember that screaming may be just as important to your defense as any weapon.

Yes, by all means, scream.* Better that than carry and use a gun. Howl in animal madness as everything human is stripped from you, and the only perceptions you experience are agony and terror.

I met a "pro gun" cop--one with a lot of "street" experience--at a dinner a few years back, and someone asked him what to do if threatened by a gang where you don't have enough ammunition to take on all of them. His answer:

I guess that's a debatable tactic and will probably prompt some objections, but intuitively it makes sense. The vermin in this story certainly seemed more interested in self-preservation than retaliation.

Doing the Numbers in DC

There have been 14 homicides this month: Three on the 1st. Two on the 2nd. One each on the 4th and 5th. Two on the 7th. And one each day from July 8 through Wednesday.

Since the antis would have us assume guns are the cause of this, let's do some basic math.

There are approximately 550,000 people who live in DC. There are approximately 4 million NRA members.

Let's see, 550 thou goes into 4 mil about 7.27 times, so multiply that by 14...

So there should have been roughly 102 homicides committed by the Association's membership in the past two weeks...

Actually, that's not a fair comparison, since only a fraction of DC residents, those who ignore the law and agents of the state [insert sarcasm here], are armed, whereas pretty much 100% of NRA members are armed to the teeth. So the NRA death toll ought to be a lot higher...

I don't get it. Something's not adding up.

Every once in a while I like to browse around the Internet to see whether or not all this effort is at least getting dispersed, and every once in a while I learn something about that dispersal I didn't know.

I was aware that many of my GUNS Magazine articles are for sale at Amazon.com, even though it looks like no one is buying them--that's no surprise as I link to past columns at the magazine's site each month here for free.

Anyway, I just had a first. My name and work turned up in a place I had no idea they had wandered into: Larry Elder cited me in Showdown: Confronting Bias, Lies, and the Special Interests that Divide America. More specifically, he cited my KABA expose on actor Mark Wahlberg (be sure to visit the Pokey Poke Picture Gallery at the end).

"Yawn," you might say, but I've never been cited as a book source before, so to get endnoted by a nationally syndicated radio host, columnist and New York Times bestselling author is a big deal for me. Naturally, I had to run right out and buy a copy. (Writing isn't supposed to work this way. It's not supposed to cost me money.)

Still, I haven't felt this famous since some musically retarded college buddies and I appeared on Houlihan and Big Chuck's "New Talent Time" a lifetime ago...

A NORTH Wales Police worker has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences following a major inquiry into gun crime in the region...His work is thought to involve keeping a firearms register...He is now the subject of a criminal investigation by officers, which forms part of a wider probe into firearms offences across North Wales.

I repeat: I do NOT purposely go our looking for additions to "The Only Ones" files. I merely look for stories related to guns.

The Mare's Leg Loophole

I just had time to read this month's issue of GUNS Magazine, and found an interesting article by Senior Field Editor John Taffin on the JB Custom Mare's Leg. Those of you at least as old as me will remember TV's Wanted: Dead or Alive, where Steve McQueen portrayed Josh Randall, a bounty hunter who carried one of the more memorable firearms of western fiction, the "Mare's Leg."

Starting with a Model 1892 Winchester, the gunsmith cut the barrel back to 12", removed most of the buttstock and re-shaped the lever to a larger more triangular affair. While he was at it he also increased the power significantly by converting the .44-40 to the larger and longer .45-70.

Every month I link to a cool and unique feature on the GUNS website, the issue of their magazine from 50 years earlier. It invariably invokes nostalgia for a simpler time, particularly an era when "gun control" laws were far less onerous and pervasive. Taffin's article reminds us of a stark reality of the time:

The Mare's Leg...was highly illegal by federal standards and required special agents on the set while being used.

So how does JB Custom produce a modern equivalent?

While it is illegal to turn a rifle into a handgun as done by Randall it is not illegal to produce such a firearm as a handgun original.

Yeah, I guess. At least until some evil traitor starts screaming "Loophole!"

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Buyback

A 33-year-old Milton man faces gun and assault charges after he allegedly shot a man who was said to have been trying to rob him at gunpoint outside a Mattapan store, prosecutors said yesterday.

But the defendant's family and friends said yesterday that the accused man, Robert Washington, had a gun last Thursday only because he was on his way to turn the weapon in to a police station in exchange for a gift card under Boston's gun buyback program...

"We're assuming that if he didn't have the gun, we'd be burying him instead of watching him go to jail today," she said.

Teaching the 2nd Amendment

It is time to demand that our nation's education system duly recognize our Bill of Rights and teach the Second Amendment according to its true intent.

I agree in spirit, but our nation really shouldn't have an education system in the first place.

As for at the state level, separation of school and state would suit me just fine--right now, with confiscatory taxes to pay for educating others and sustaining collectivist teachers union monopolies, and with compulsory attendance in mandated Second Amendment-free zones, the entire corrupt system is inevitably one big inmate-conditioning hive.

Admittedly, the first shouldn't be a crime, but if Smith caught you with pot, what do you think he would have done? I also can't judge the second incident, because we all know how a vengeful ex can ruin your life, but again, should the call have been made against one of us, Bharat would have unquestioningly slapped on the cuffs. As for Officer Malave, those carpet guys are just lucky they didn't lift a finger against him.

More than 2,000 rounds of ammunition and 70 firearms were turned in to North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP during a month-long gun amnesty program that ended last week.

Most surrendered weapons were long guns with some handguns as well. One sawed-off shotgun was surrendered along with a handgun believed to date from the First World War.
