After a siege that began on April 2, 1780, Americans suffer their worst defeat of the revolution on this day in 1780, with the unconditional surrender of Major General Benjamin Lincoln to British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton and his army of 10,000 at Charleston, South Carolina.

It's Not About Guns

The former Liberal government "broke every rule in the book" when it signed a $273-million computer contract for the federal gun registry -- now the subject of a "stop-work" order -- and never reported the costs or terms of the deal to Parliament, a longtime Conservative gun-registry critic alleges.

It's about political connections, cronyism, cushy deals, corruption and incompetence. In other words, typical government operations.

And individual rights be damned.

Shots Aren't Preceded By "Dear"

NRA wants us to send letters to UN officials protesting their plans for global gun control, and have prepared cut and paste letters for that purpose.

It's hardly the "shot heard 'round the world" Wayne is painting it to be, but OK, I'll send those tyrants a warning letter.

Still, I'll be damned if I call either of them "Dear" or "Honorable."

It's not about controlling the UN. It's about controlling treasonous US representatives.

An East Windsor police officer is on the hot seat after shooting someone in the face with a taser. And the victim he tasered is someone who patrols the streets with the officer!...

A prong from the taser went right into the face of the East Windsor officer jolting him with tens of thousands of volts of electricity. It happened Monday night after roll call, when two officers were discussing their tasers and one accidentally discharged his weapon not believing there was a cartridge inside.

Shocking, on the face of it...

Russia's biggest carmaker plans to make a high-tech version of the Soviet-era Lada car that will be named after the creator of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, the Vedomosti business daily said.

"We will probably work... to create a military jeep," said the head of arms trader Rosoboronexport, Sergei Chemezov, quoted by the paper...

Vedomosti suggested the new car could be Russia's answer to the United States' Hummer, a vehicle originally designed for army use that is now a rich city-dweller's status symbol and is increasingly popular on the streets of Moscow.

Tragedy and Justice

The father of a three-year-old Detroit boy who fatally shot himself in the head has been charged with second-degree child abuse...a 4-year felony.

Tragic. If you're a moral and rational person, I don't think there's any punishment that could be meted out that would be worse than the knowledge that your actions led to such a result. I'm not saying their shouldn't be legal consequences, but just think life would be literal hell and those consequences would pale against the guilt.

I don't normally post these types of stories. A week and a half ago, a few contributors sent me a link for "The Only Ones" files: a story about the New York police official's son who killed himself with his father's negligently stored pistol. My reply as to why I didn't want to post on that incident:

Yeah, I saw this last night and decided not to do an "only ones" feature on it just because of the nature of the poor kid and the horror his parents must be going through--maybe I'm copping out, but I wouldn't wish this hell on my worst enemy, and I've accused the other side of dancing in blood at tragedies--I just can't bring myself to use this story to my advantage.

I still feel that way. The only reason I bring it up here is to note that under similar circumstances, I see a citizen facing 4-year charges, but not the cop.

State Secrets

The names of those packing heat in Florida should not be a state secret.

Boy, I wish I wasn't in a hurry to get to another 14 hour work day--these morons really deserve a good fisking, they are just so wrong on so many counts.

Example:

In other years, gun supporters have argued that the knowledge that someone had a permit to carry a concealed weapon would be a deterrent to crime. Now they have reversed themselves, contending that keeping concealed weapons permits as public records makes the gun owners vulnerable to attack or harassment.

No, the argument has always been the knowledge that someone is likely to be armed in a given situation is what has been presented as a deterrent. Knowing specifically who eliminates the uncertainty factor and identifies a target.

It's yet another reason why I think whether or not you're carrying should be a personal secret, not a state one.

We're the Only Ones Cleared Enough

The police officer said he had met Alice less than an hour earlier when he found her walking along a road. He said he gave her a lift as she appeared "agitated and drunk".

The officer said he was running out of fuel and went to a cash machine to get money to buy petrol.

He said that on returning to the car he drove a short distance when Alice shot herself with his gun, which had been lying in the car.

What, you're not supposed to leave a loaded gun next to an "agitated and drunk" teenage girl you picked up--I mean, gave a helpful ride to--off the street?

Good call by that police ombudsman, that there's no evidence this was "anything other than a tragic accident". I hope the girl's family that went to her with their dispute is satisfied with the fox's henhouse investigation.

"Gun Control" I Can Live With

The law says police officers must hand in their service weapons at the end of work, unless they have special permission to carry their guns after work. There are good reasons why this provision was included. Now it needs to be more effectively implemented.

We're the Only Ones Anticlimactic Enough

An off-duty Palm Beach County sheriff's sergeant initially told police he shot a 21-year-old man for stealing his badge and nearly running him over.

But an investigation into the 2 a.m. encounter concluded the two men were in a dispute over $40 because Ira Joe Stuckey did not complete the sex act he was paid to perform on the sergeant.

On April 21, Stuckey, 6-foot-2, 230 pounds and wearing a wig, ended up with a bullet wound in his left arm.

On Friday, Sgt. James Seigfreid, 48, ended up in jail.

Talk about blowing things all out of proportion...

This Day in History: May 8

On this day in 1792, Congress passes the second portion of the Militia Act, requiring that “every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years… be enrolled in the militia.”

A Morris County corrections officer was being treated Friday for a hand wound suffered when his personal weapon discharged while he was cleaning it, County Sheriff Edward Rochford said.

"His...weapon discharged."

"[He] was...cleaning his personal weapon...when it discharged..."

"[T]here was one round in the chamber which apparently discharged..."

That's one hell of a willful gun...

Church Group Held Up by Armed Robber

A women's group from Christ Church in Kenilworth was forced to lie face down on the floor by an armed robber.

In the group was a pregnant woman who started having contractions during the robbery.

Well why didn't Reverends John Algera and Stafford Miller step in to help protect them?

The campaign against gun violence was begun by the Rev. John Algera, pastor of the Madison Avenue Christian Reformed Church, and the Rev. Stafford Miller, pastor of the St. Philip's Ministry of the United Methodist Church, in answer to a spate of random gunfire that erupted on the city's Northside late last year....

Gun Battle Erupts at Vancouver Rap Show

A dance-floor brawl early Saturday erupted into gunfire — leaving one man clinging to life in hospital, another suffering from a gunshot wound and pandemonium in a Vancouver venue...

The night's bill featured headliner Lord Finesse(Robert Hall Jr.) from New York, the Chillin Villain Empire from Los Angeles and local rappers Fourth World, who were celebrating the release of their new CD.

Must be the fault of all those American guns. Every time me 'n my homies get around them, stuff like this is always happening...

Bruce Willis Backs Gun Rights

Movie star Bruce Willis supports Americans in their constitutional right to carry a gun, insisting everyone should be able to defend themselves with a weapon if need be.

Chaka Con

Singer Chaka Khan's son was acquitted of murder Friday in the shooting death of a teenager during a party at her home two years ago...

Holland testified that he never intended to kill Bailey when he poked at him with an M-16 assault rifle. The two were discussing an affair the younger man claimed to have had with Holland's girlfriend when Holland pointed the gun at his friend.

An "M-16 assault rifle"? Not an AR-15 or a variant? And in California?

Surely Bill Lockyer's office is all over this?

The trademark incompetence of the Associated Press notwithstanding, what the hell is Chaka Khan doing allowing any kind of gun in her home?

As I wrote in GUNS AND AMMO a few years back, she joined other celebrites in HCI's "Open Letter to the NRA":

"We are not 'gun haters'," they protested, and then demanded limiting handgun purchases to one a month, banning "assault weapons," magazine capacity limits, gun locks and "a 'cooling off' period. . .[that] might just save the life of a child. . ."

Congratulations, Chaka. The 17-year-old your son blew away will now be added to the "child gun death" statistics you and your fellow hypocrites use to further the cause of disarming responsible citizens.

And no doubt the idiots who served on the jury applaud such measures.

Profiles in Courage II

Right. "Courage." What a way to spin "He got caught."

First Rep. Patrick Kennedy says he consumed no alcohol, then he says he doesn't remember anything. If he doesn't, then how does he know? And why does the hostess at the Hawk and Dove, who says she saw him drinking, not want to give her name? Kinda makes you wonder why someone from the working class would fear the men behind the man described as a hero to them.

We hear all kinds of excuses, from it's the pills to the "Kennedy Curse" to blaming it on his genes. The establishment media has him covered, ginning up sympathy by explaining how such conditions affect "millions". And now, he's wearing his admission to rehab like Teddy wore his neck brace.

Former Louisiana governor, the spectacularly corrupt (Kennedyesque?) Edwin Edwards, is reported to have said the only way he could lose his election was if he was "found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy." So of course Kennedy's government-addicted constituents will continue to back him.

But all this is to be expected. Here's the real crime, being committed right under our noses: The Capitol Police are "investigating" their own, that is, the fox is in charge of the henhouse case. We learn they "have taken disciplinary action against a watch commander for the handling of Rep. Patrick Kennedy's car accident..."

OK. Why isn't he identified? And what "disciplinary action."

As I wrote when this story broke:

Time for an independent investigation--separate [those involved] and put them under oath. Let them know prosecutions will follow lies.

Somebody gave the word to give Kennedy a pass.

Who was it, and how high up did the orders come down from?

Don't expect to see this revealed, though. Such demands will stay in the realm of obscure blogs and kept safely away from an American consciousness that mostly wouldn't care anyway.

And this degenerate, lying mental defective will emerge as a champion of those who can't control themselves, and continue his crusade to control those of us who can.

Yesterday's re-visit to an old topic produced some interesting back-and-forth. But the comment that struck me as most in need of exploring is the one that isn't there. It was deleted by its author at the original post, but it still came to me via email.

Meet "Blain":

Ad hominem arguments are much easier than an intellectual debate aren't they? We all only know what we've read about the HRT. I'm willing to guess that none of you have been in the FBI nor have you had any direct relation to them. So we're forced to examine our sources and form an opinion. I for one take the word of a college educated man who chose the path of law enforcement over a white supremacist who stated "The tyrant's blood shall flow" and "Whether we live or die we will not obey you…war is upon our land."

I'm just interested in why you believe your own government would pay for an organization just to kill it's own citizens. What would be the purpose?

As for the last question, oh, I don't know...it's not like governments have ever committed genocide on unfavored segments of their populations before...but in fairness, our current government will generally settle for obedience. The killing only happens if people resist and defy.

And we all know "college educated men" have never committed acts of violence, right Professor Kaczynski? Why I'd bet every one of the feds at Waco had a college degree...

As for that comment about the "tyrants blood," wow, what kind of sicko would utter such a thought? Ditto that part about resisting to the death...

Weaver was a "separatist," Blain, not a "supremacist." There is a difference, and whether one finds it distasteful or not, it's not supposed to mean a death sentence for his wife and son. And we don't have to "take [his] word" for anything--there's that little documented matter of the $3.1 M settlement...

But it sure says a lot about you, that you prefer to believe someone who "chose the path of law enforcement," Blain. As we've seen time and again here at WarOnGuns, they are "the only ones" professional, responsible, believable...enough...

Baird wrote that Capitol Police Patrol Division units, who are trained in driving under the influence cases, were not allowed to perform basic field sobriety tests on the Congressman. Instead, two sergeants, who also responded to the accident, proceeded to confer with the Capitol Police watch commander on duty and then “ordered all of the Patrol Division Units to leave the scene and that they were taking over.”

A source tells the DRUDGE REPORT: "It was apparent that the driver was intoxicated (stumbling) and claimed he was in a hurry to make a vote.

"When it became apparent who it was, instead of processing a normal DWI, the watch commander had the Patrol units clear the scene. The commander allowed other building officials drive Kennedy home."

Is this standard procedure? If so, how many other times has it happened? If not, why did it happen this time?

Who were the sergeants?

Who was the watch commander?

Time for an independent investigation--separate them and put them under oath. Let them know prosecutions will follow lies.

Lon Horiuchi and the JB...Uh..HRT Heroes

I don't want to debate Ruby Ridge or Waco because you seem to know less than I do. But thanks for assuming I know nothing. I actually know a lot about Lon Horiuchi. I do know he helped rescue hostages that were being held in a hotel and was deployed to several missions in Mexico to stop the drug trade.

Judging from the comments, it would seem an old post has touched a nerve...

While this law did little to affect the actions of criminals, it damaged one of our principle British industries. Equally, it left England in a totally undefended state in 1940 when after the evacuation from Dunkirk, we had less than a full division of fighting men properly equipped. This state of unpreparedness was caused directly by the Home Office when the anti-firearm laws were passed.

A Great Way to Put Someone's Life in Danger

A man allegedly walking around an East San Jose home with a gun prompted San Jose police to surround the house for about an hour this morning while detaining the man and securing five other tenants.

San Jose police Sgt. Nick Muyo said police never found the alleged weapon and cannot say for sure whether the man ever held it. Either way, he did not threaten the other residents, Muyo said, and was therefore not arrested.

Just call in a tip from a pay phone, and society's hysterical anti-gun reflexes will take over from there...

Perhaps I'm just jaded. I mean, how many sheriffs' departments do we find willing to auction off any gun, let alone a machine gun? And I admittedly know nothing about the purchaser.

But with rich benefactors like George Soros and Andrew McKelvey bankrolling the antis, I can't help but wonder if the guy who's got 80+ Grand for a collector's item has donated anywhere near that amount to defending the Second Amendment.

A Private Party

A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled that New York can have access to gun tracing information gathered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, despite a recently-passed measure that forbids such data from being used in civil suits.

The judge said that measure doesn't apply to New York because it was acting as a private plaintiff, not "the public.”

Well, hey, that door swings both ways, then. If New York is a private party, then its gun control laws should be applied to its agents as private individuals. Any public funds used in pursuit of private aims--including city facilities and compensation for city personnel engaged in pursuing this lawsuit during working hours--should be treated as stolen.

A New Gun Argument

That's your "new gun argument"? Sorry pal, "The 2nd Amendment ain't about duck hunting" bumper stickers have been around for years. Clinton and Kerry in camos didn't fool us then, and you're not fooling anyone but the fools now.

The National Rifle Association regularly says that we don't need new laws and should simply enforce the regulations on the books. But if many of the existing laws are unenforceable, that statement is meaningless.

That's because gun control laws don't work. Some of us wish NRA would accept that simple fact, but evidently they think that message resonates with enough voters to advance their agenda, and they're playing a political game.

Basically what you're saying is, if 20,000 laws on the books are ineffective, 20,001 will do the trick. In what other demonstration of cause and effect would that not be considered insane?

Yes, there is a cultural difference between big cities and rural areas, but it's a difference in how guns are used. Rural people treasure their guns mostly for hunting and recreation, and as collectors. In inner cities, guns -- especially handguns -- are used almost entirely to threaten or kill other human beings.

You want a "new gun argument"? You haven't got the guts to explore a "new gun argument."

But it's inarguable that the culture you rail against, where handgun abuse is the highest, resides in areas where the populace overwhelmingly votes in lock-step with the "gun control" slate.

Sorry, E. J. Dionne Jr. You've demonstrated nothing new here. Napolitano Retains Power to (Try) Seizing Weapons

State senators failed by one vote Wednesday to override Gov. Janet Napolitano's veto of legislation to trim gubernatorial powers to seize weapons.

The 19-10 vote — one vote short of the necessary two-thirds margin — came even after Sen. Dean Martin, R-Phoenix, speculated that Napolitano vetoed the measure so she could use her emergency powers to take weapons away from members of the Minuteman Project patrolling the Mexican border.

Why this is even debatable is beyond me. Special contempt goes to Rebecca Rios, who fled like a coward from taking a stand, and Robert Cannell, who's "not willing to override the governor" on the Bill of Rights.

Senior Disarmament

THE son of a wealthy retired businessman who died of three shotgun wounds claims the tragedy could have been avoided...

Company director Angus Ashton, 56, said his father, who suffered from dementia, had his driving licence taken off him by the DVLA on advice from a doctor. But he still held a licence for three shotguns.

So naturally the solution is to disarm the elderly--probably the most law-abiding and least violent demographic on the planet--and leave them vulnerable to physically stronger predators.

An Oklahoma legislator said he hopes to make some changes to a new law that makes it illegal for authorities to confiscate weapons during a state of emergency.

State Rep. Mike Shelton said House Bill 2696 has placed the power of the law into the wrong hands.

"During states of emergency, I think police need total control. They don't need to worry who has guns and who doesn't. If the governor calls for Oklahomans to relinquish their guns, the public needs to do so," Shelton said.

Some people are hell-bent on making peaceful coexistence impossible.

A gun belonging to an Orange County Sheriff's Department reserve deputy was found at the home of a Swedish businessman accused of crashing a rare Ferrari on a coastal highway, authorities said Tuesday...

Records also show Davis was issued a permit to carry a concealed weapon by the Orange County Sheriff's Department in 2002 for self-protection. The professional services reserve deputies are made up of business executives who have no police powers but receive badges and sheriff's identification cards.

They offer technical advice to Sheriff Mike Carona, whose reserve deputy program came under criticism last year following reports that he deputized dozens of political allies without conducting background checks.

Carona has been better than most at issuing "permissions" (if you consider that "better") but you still need to prove a need to his satisfaction. And we've discussed this business of deputizing cronies before.

On Knowing One's Place

The trade association representing the firearms industry yesterday asked to be included in the "gun summit" being held today at Gracie Mansion for more than a dozen mayors from around the nation.

"Our industry has developed programs that are working to reduce criminal misuse of firearms," Lawrence Keane, senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, wrote the mayor.

"We would welcome the opportunity to educate mayors about these programs."

He didn't get very far.

"Are they mayors?" asked Stu Loeser, Bloomberg's press secretary, dismissing the request out of hand.

What's the matter, Mr. Keane? Did you think that your fawning (NSSF...applauds your...national summit on illegal guns) and pledging to abet the facists ("I will serve the master of the Precious. Good master, good Smeagol, gollum, gollum!") would make them respect you and treat you like an equal?

We're the Only Ones Choked Up Enough

A disgraced patrolman convicted in one of the most notorious abuse cases in city history — the 1994 chokehold death of an unarmed Bronx man who was tossing a football in the street — has chosen a new career path: motivational speaker and self-defense trainer.

Per his website:

Francis X. Livoti was a New York City Police Officer for fifteen years and a union official in the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association for the last nine of those years.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association? Oh yeah, the guys whose president, Patrick T. Lynch advocates:

"We need to make it clear that if someone lifts even a finger against a police officer, their life could be on the line."

It's so refreshing these days to find people who mean exactly what they say.

And as for Livoti?

"I served my time. I have a right to make a living."

Uh, not quite.

Livoti was first tried in a non-jury trial in the Bronx on a charge of criminally negligent homicide. A judge ruled prosecutors didn't make their case, despite testimony by the medical examiner that Baez died of asphyxia caused by choking...The officer was kicked off the force in 1997 when police officials ruled he used an illegal choke hold. A year later, a federal jury convicted him of violating Baez's civil rights. The city later paid the Baez family $3 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.

What do you think the chances are for a judge to fix criminal charges and the city to pay the civil settlement if a non-LEO had done this to one of NYC's finest?

Oh, that's right--lifting a finger is a death sentence. Never mind.

God forbid the right of the people to keep and bear arms should be the focus...but then, we're dealing with people who view themselves as overlords, not public servants.

Really?

Who did the estimating? What methodology did they use? Have the findings been published? Who reviewed them to make sure that statement isn't pure agenda-driven hysteria? If provable, how many "gun industry" executives have been charged, prosecuted and convicted for selling "illegal guns," which is...umm...illegal?

And, if true, what does that say about GCA 68 and the Brady background check?

Thomas King, president of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, the National Rifle Association affiliate in the state, says legal gun owners are being harassed because of the actions of criminals.

Although he says he backs Bloomberg's plans to clean New York's streets of illegal weapons, he insists the key to accomplishing that is better enforcement of existing laws, not new regulations on the books.

Really, Mr. King?

Assuming the reporter hasn't misquoted you, you're saying enforce the Sullivan Laws? You're saying keep Big Apple citizens disarmed under force of law and punish those who defy such edicts?

I'd love to know what you actually said to the press, Mr. King, and the rationale behind it. Consider this an open invitation to clarify any misunderstanding this report may have created in the minds of gun owners.

Haha. Funny prank. And this after one of their own killed another in an "accident" seven months earlier.

Note how the cops tried to keep a lid on things--with the lame excuse they're not required to volunteer their reports to the media. They were trying to keep it under wraps and hoped no one would notice, plain and simple. And the excuse that the "victim" didn't wish to press charges sounds like bunk. Someone with knowledge of PA law correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is, once a crime has been committed--particularly in front of witnesses--it is prosecuted under the auspices of "People vs..." The affected cop may forego civil charges, but he does not have the authority to suspend state law.

I love the mouthpiece who complains they're damned if they do or don't treat cops like ordinary citizens: like it would be an option for you or me not to be prosecuted for putting a gun to a cop's head--and as if our "punishment" would be to do nothing on the people's dime to the tune of over $40K per year for life.

The two men, whose names were not known, and a third man, broke into a house on Cleveland Street around 10 a.m. Saturday and used force on an occupant, Danbury Det. Capt. Mitch Weston said.

Two hours of classroom instruction in the safe handling of handguns will be taught...

Wal-Mart's policy regarding guns varies, but it has stopped selling them at about 1,000 stores, and that's good news for folks who believe guns are too readily available...

A RISDON Prison guard appeared in court last night after allegedly being caught taking a gun and drugs to work.

The 28-year-old Brighton man was apprehended on his way to the prison early yesterday morning by police acting on a tip-off.

A .25-calibre semi-automatic pistol and ammunition were allegedly found wrapped in a cloth under his car's passenger seat.

Also allegedly located was a quantity of cannabis wrapped in a balloon and a sachet containing a morphine-based prescription drug, namely MS Contrin.

The "tip-off" may be the tip-off as to what went down here...

Pistol-Packing Mayor

Melton, a former head of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, has often been seen carrying weapons, presumably for the same political effects. Since Melton was elected on a crime-fighting platform, looking and talking tough is part of the package...

Wearing police garb, and brandishing shotguns during stops and even showing up on a citizen's front porch to confront someone he said threatened him puts him in danger and is a recipe for volatility.

I can't figure out from this if Melton is a victim of all-too-typical media hysteria, or if he's a bully abusing his authority. Guess we'll just have to keep our eyes and ears open and see if anything more transpires down in Jackson...

A Hermosa Beach police officer named in two excessive force lawsuits was arrested in Redondo Beach last week after he got into a scuffle with someone who reportedly was heckling him during a karaoke performance.
