A Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy was charged Thursday with two misdemeanor manslaughter charges after he ran down three competitive bicyclists in his patrol car in Cupertino, killing two and injuring the third...

Council crossed the center line on Stevens Canyon Road in Cupertino and struck the three cyclists at 10:25 a.m. on a Sunday, authorities said. Witnesses at the scene said there were no skid marks and that the officer said he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

And it's the job's fault. Long hours.

We've all worked long hours. I'm just wondering if the same charges would have applied to any of us under similar circumstances, not being "Only Ones" and all.

A special prosecutor investigating the Perry Township constable's office has filed felony corruption charges in Marion Superior Court against Constable Roy Houchins and a former deputy.

The racketeering and theft-related charges center on accusations that two guns were inappropriately taken from a police property room and that sales of vehicles connected with the office also were improper.

They keep calling the inspection crews "strike teams" as well, and I am getting sick of it. Volunteers, both from the communities at risk and from other states, saw the need and pitched in.

These same people who showed they didn't need "their leaders" to tell them to fight the river are now refused entry into their own homes. They are told to wait until the homes are deemed safe and treated like little children who couldn't have survived the last few days without their "leadership". Homeowners were required to give up the keys to their homes to people they now don't trust in order to have them inspected. One community got fed up and stormed the checkpoints and sent the police running. That, btw, is not being reported.

I just saw the home I grew up in surrounded by water Saturday because of a levee failure. A levee that the corps of engineers (again, lower case intentional) refused to allow to be improved, thus showing their "leadership."

Yeah, I'd trust any of them the keys to my property.

One person? And being pushed was all it took to dissuade him?

...almost a dozen people had witnessed some part of the incident, with at least two trying to physically stop the suspect...

Another bit of journalistic omission: How many stories mention the number of attendees? From this picture, it looks like about a dozen showed up. Why does that result in such disproportionate coverage? And who these people are as individuals shouldn't be factored into the credibility of what it is they're demanding?

The sheriff told Jackson that children needed to be taught the sanctity of human life, community leaders should examine why young men kill each other and parents should encourage sexual abstinence for kids and young adults.

After the Flood

Strike teams searched flood fringe areas on both sides of the Cedar River on Sunday, finding flooded basements, collapsed walls and piles of debris.

Watch the confrontation with the homeowner at 1:58 into the video. The guy is on his porch, and the "Only One" orders him inside.

"I'll make sure you never come back here again" doesn't make sense in conjunction with the hastily added "until this is all over." Did somebody suddenly remember they were being recorded?

In fairness, I did get the following first-person observation:

It is interesting to note the response of Katrina victims that have been taken in by our community to this disaster. Prior to the current events I have met numerous Katrina victims and know that our city, along with many others, took in large numbers of these people, found them shelter, gave them money, etc... While sandbagging at many different locations I was never able to find a single Katrina victim with one exception. While sandbagging at Mercy Hospital we found three of them about a block away, sitting on their porch, watching all the volunteers sandbag. They refused to come and help. Figured being through one disaster like this they would like to help prevent another one and help save the community that took them in in the their time of need. Guess they have just gotten to used to the government and everyone else doing everything for them.

So it would be easy to hold out a snapshot of frayed tempers as representative of heavy-handedness. That's not my point.

My point is we should all be involved with our communities and we should have the leadership that involves us. And that includes the sheriff or police chief holding muster and training drills for We the People to act in our capacity as members of the militia.

Still, I can't blame "the authorities" overmuch, because if they did hold a volunteer event, how many of our countrymen do you suppose would show up?

The Kindness of Strangers

A trained nurse, Rachelle Jackson immediately ran toward the sound of the crash. A Chicago police car had collided with another vehicle and was starting to smoke, two officers still inside. Fearing an explosion, she quickly pulled one officer from the passenger side. She never imagined her act of kindness nearly six years ago would land her in jail for more than 10 months on charges that she robbed, battered and disarmed a peace officer.

Georgia, Florida and Texas are the top suppliers of crime guns to other states, according to crime gun trace data recently released by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) and analyzed by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Just one problem--well, several, actually:

But ATF and gun proponents found flaws in the Brady Center's calculations.

ATF supervisor Todd Reichert in Washington noted that the agency's data included some gun sales that were originally made as much as 10 years ago, which is much longer than the two-year "time to crime" ATF considers an indicator of a possible illegal gun sale.

Reichert also said not all law enforcement agencies report recovered crime guns for tracing. And, he said, spikes in the numbers come after ATF helps police agencies clear backlogs as those departments begin reporting recovered crime guns to the federal agency.

That's pretty pathetic when even BATFU and The Atlanta Journal Constitution won't give you cover for your faulty analysis and calculated lies.

"I didn't want to be responsible for someone out there carrying a gun," former Torrance Police Chief Don Nash is quoted as saying in the article. He granted only one permit during 22 years as chief - to a South Bay prosecutor who had been threatened.

"The premise is that you assume some kind of responsibility," Nash added. "I didn't want it on my conscience if someone out there shot somebody."

But I'd sleep like a baby knowing some citizen had been brutally murdered instead. Besides, I haven't issued permits to these guys, or to these guys either, so what's the problem?

Tinkling With Mike McCune

On a slope of loose rock the ground was so heavily littered with spent bullets that when a member of our group dragged his walking stick, the ground tinkled.

I picked up a silver-colored bullet 1½ inches long. If this was left by a hunter, he must have been looking for water buffalo.

The Great Clearfield County Bean Can Bust

A Clearfield County man who gave undercover federal agents explicit instructions on how to make what he called “bean can grenades” has been arrested on weapons charges.

Servant Gets Written Warning

GCO has written the chief of the Glynn County Police Department, asking for this department to cease detaining people solely for open carrying. The letter was prompted by a GCO member being twice detained by GCPD for no reason other than the members’ open carrying.
